" THE EXCELSIOR WATER" - 3/17/2003 7:42:57 AM
Guest
I have an unusual specimen that I have almost no information about. It' s an emerald green, heavily pontilled, applied blob top, heaxagonal half-pint with " THE EXCELSIOR WATER" embossed vertically with one word on each of three consecutive sides. I was informed that it was probably from a spring water company in the Pacific Northwest. A dealer at a bottle show told me that a similar-sounding bottle sold at auction for $700 about a year ago. I was hoping someone might have more information about this unique piece.

Being a 1/2 pint bottle I would imagine it is either a soda bottle or mineral water bottle.
There are Excelsior Springs, Saratoga, NY mineral water bottles listed in Kovel' s bottle books and Excelsior Soda works, Los Angeles, Ca.
Sounds like a nice find and being sided makes in more valuable, IMHO.
The color' s good, too.

I doubt if it is worth much to the serious bottle collector.
It' s fairly plain and common and it seems the label was put on with a stencil.
Not much monetary value to me.
It' s like the kerosene bottles for a cook stove.

It' s a soda siphon/seltzer with out it' s top.
The value I don' t know, here they vary between 50 cents and a few hunded dollers for the colourless ones, a lot more for some of the coloured ones.
Almost all of them are sandblasted or acid ecthed and not imbossed.

The bottle pictured above is a Soda Syphon bottle that does not have its crome top.
It would have held Soda Water, and was used on your Bar and sent back to the factory to be refilled when emptied.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Craig. The dealer that told you $700 was in the right ball park. From what I can tell, the price of this soda can vary. A dark green one sold in 1997 for $770, but another in emerald green sold the same year for $330. (The Auction Price Report, 1997 ed., by William Brown) If there was really any difference between the two colors, I can' t say. The more expensive one had some overall wear, and the other had been cleaned. Of course, its been six years since the last auction I can quote, so maybe the bottle has levelled at around $700. By the way, check the number of sides on your bottle again...it' s supposed to be 8-sided. If yours is 7-sided, all bets are off! In any case, it sounds like a nice piece o' glass.
