San Diego Bottle Show - June 11, 2011

While attending the annual bottle show this past weekend, which was sponsored by The Antique Bottle Club of San Diego, I had the good fortune of meeting a fellow collector that I was able to arrange a trade with on a local medicine bottle I had in exchange for a local acl soda bottle he had. All things considered, I'd say it was an even-steven trade. The medicine bottle I traded is the one pictured below ...                     A. L. Boehmer / Eagle Drug Store / San Diego, Cal. / Circa 1900 As I am a collector of soda bottles and not medicinals, I know very little about this particular bottle, other than it is in very high demand locally. It was in mint condition, considered scarce, and valued at about $200.00.                  On the next page I will show and discuss the soda bottle I acquired in trade.          By the way, the bottle show had good attendance and was considered a success by all. SPBOB

                                                     ~ COUNTRY BOY ~
Prior to the show I had no idea I would find someone there who would be interested in my Eagle Drug bottle, but I took it along "just in case."  When I showed it to a club member I knew, (I am not a current member myself) he introduced me to another member that I had never met before, but one who was a very likeable guy and, as it turned out, had a lot in common with me as we both collect other 1940s/50s memorabilia such as toys - comics - etc.    When I handed him the Eagle Drug bottle for examination, I could tell immediately that he was interested in it. In fact, he soon informed me it was the "only" bottle he could think of that he didn't already have and would be willing to trade for. And that was a-okay with me because the soda bottle he had was one I have been wanting for about ten years now, but just could never get a decent lead on all these years.  I have only seen one on e-bay, and it wasn't in the greatest shape, but still sold for around $150.00. Long story short ... The switch-a-roo was commenced and I am now the proud owner of a mint condition "Country Boy."  It is from a small bottler here in San Diego - made by Owens-Illinois - and dated 1944. The front label depicts a Tom Sawyer type character sporting a bamboo fishing pole and straw hat. (My brother would shoot me if he knew I used the term "pole" instead of "rod," but I honestly think back in the day that everyone called them fishing "poles").  I have no doubt that this bottle would make a handsome addition to any soda bottle collection, especially to southern California collectors. But finding one in decent shape is another thing.  Following this I will post a picture of the back label as well as the base, along with some other interesting information regarding San Diego soda bottles. SPBOB [ Front - The picture really doesn't do it justice. It was taken in bright light. It is near mint in hand ] [ Country Boy - San Diego, Calif. - Owens-Illinois / 1944 - Rare ]

Lastly ... (for now).

He is another acl that I've been wanting for years and was able to purchase from the same guy I got the Country Boy from. So all in all it was a good weekend to be soda bottle collector. I am as happy as a lark!

Shame on you, Bob, for not supporting your local bottle club by being a member.

I do support my local bottle club. I paid $2.00 to get into the show.   Actually, they have been trying to recruit me for some time now. One of these days when I'm not tied to other obligations I plan to join.

Here's a close up of the Country Boy label from my acl book. It's hard to explain how much this bottle means to me. It is representative of everything I am as an acl collector. Now that I own one, I consider it my avatar. Meaning, if I could 'be' a soda bottle, this is the one I would morf myself into.

Thanks to all for stopping by.

Bob, did you show up early and help set up tables? Did you assist with Dealer Hospitality? Did you stuff envelopes for pre-show mailings? Did you distribute flyers to all the shops you hit looking for bottles? Have you contributed an article to the club newsletter?

If show admission were free what would you have contributed to the organization that brought dozens of dealers with thousands of bottles to your neighborhood so you could pick and choose?

I thought you were kidding at first, but apparently not. The truth is, I barely had time to go to the show as it was. My livelyhood these days is to care for two elderly people in my home, ages 89 an 92, which occupies my time 24/7/365. When I do leave the house I have to pay someone to care for my residents who can't be left alone. But I do contribute funds to this website, which I consider the next best thing.

My apologies. I must be thinking of another SODAPOPBOB who regularly posts on this forum about the finds he makes in various shops and his bottle hunts along remote California highways. If you happen across that other SODAPOPBOB tell him to take along some flyers for his local bottle show to distribute when he's on the "hunt". Suggest to him if he finds himself homebound to volunteer to help with mailings for the club. And if he's lucky to have computer access during the day mention he could write an article for his local club newsletter. Any of those things would benefit the SODAPOPBOB who just shows up once a year and pays his two bucks to attend the local bottle show produced by the hard work of numerous volunteers.

I'm not sure why you are singling me out, it's not normally your nature. But I suppose you have your reasons. Yeah, I get out from time to time. We all do. But that doesn't mean I have to join the Girl Scouts just because I enjoy their cookies. I realize that a one day a year bottle show is a lot of work, but I also know that not everyone travels in the same circles in this old world of ours. The guy I got my Country Boy bottle from said he left the show with $6,000.00 cash in his pocket. And even though I didn't help him set up his display table, I didn't hear him complaining about it either. Everybody locally understands and accepts my situation, hopefully you will as well.

Respectfully,

Bob

Bob,

To me you seem like a nice guy who is enthusiastic about bottle collecting. If we weren't four thousand miles apart I could picture us talking bottles for hours on end. It would seem to be in your best interest to be more connected to your local bottle community especially since you are looking for some hard-to-find San Diego bottles. A few more friends helping in the chase could be a good thing.

Dennis ~

Thanks. I knew we were on the same page, but perhaps just talking in slightly different languages. And yes, I'm sure we have a lot in common. The president of our local bottle club is a friend of mine and, through him, I stay abreast of things. I just don't have the time, especially in the evenings when their meetings are held, to participate and attend. Lastly, on the ocassions when I do leave the house during the day it cost me $10.00 an hour to have someone be here, and $15.00 an hour in the evenings after 5:PM. That adds up quick!     Sure, I suppose I could stuff envelopes and such, but I just haven't crossed that bridge yet. Plus, soda bottles encompass only about 25% of my collecting interest. The remaining 75% is with other memoribia which there aren't even clubs for. I'm really not sure why I am disclosing all of this, but hopefully it will explain why I am at home so much and why I have so much time on my hands to be online.

Congratulations! What a great story! And I *love* the bottle. And that Vegas Vic is as pretty a copy as I've ever seen -- you really did luck out.

The gentleman you got the Country Boy from was Larry Westfall. Great all around guy and like a second father to me. I'm glad to see the ACL's went to a good home! I realize you don't have much spare time on your hands, but trust me when i say it would greatly behoove you to join the San Diego Bottle Club. Mike Bryant is a great guy and has a great collection, but the wealth of information you are missing out on every month cannot be put into words. Just trying to help a local collector out.

you have enough on your plate, no one should be telling you what to join or do,its not their place, just you being on this site and helping others and newbies is enough for me, going through simler circumstances myself , it really bothers me that someone has the gall to be all rigihtous and tell you what do to , a few private pms would of been better so it was not brought out in the public forum,
you shouldnt have to explain yourself or personal issues to anyone. everyone has things going on, employeed ,unemployeed , kids, familys ect ect no one has the right to tell you what you should be doing. Hope to see your great input and knowledge back soon

this is not ment for ilovejake above but for some of the previous post from other members (you know who you are) I believe an apology is in order here, Dont mean to offend anyone but just bringing up so point on etiqute that I think should be followed.
Steve
