                                                  “Don Diego Beverages”
                                                    San Diego, California

Just yesterday I purchased the 1949 “Don Diego Beverages” acl soda bottle shown below. I have been wanting one for at least thirty years now. The only other example I have is a broken one I found several years ago. A collector friend of mine came across this “up-grade” recently and offered it to me. It has no cracks or nicks, but it does show signs of some case wear. On a scale of 1 to 10 my friend and I agreed it was a 7.5. I paid $150.00 for it, with one in mint condition being worth about $200.00.

It was made by Owens-Illinois with the following mark 23 <(I)> 9 The 23 indicates it was made in Los Angeles, California. The L.A. plant opened around 1945. I’m not sure if the plant is still open. The latest listing I have for it is 1970.

Don Diego was basically a fictional character and something like Zorro. This type of imagery is popular in southern California and can still be found in various forms of advertising.
The next San Diego acl on my want list is a “30 Below.” But they are so rare that the likelihood of my finding one are slim to none. Local collectors value them at about $1000.00, with individuals waiting in line to purchase them at that price.

Following this page are three more with additional photos.

I hope you enjoy my latest acquisition. I’m totally elated about it! Currently it is the number one acl soda bottle in my collection. After all ... I’ve been waiting thirty years to acquire one!

[Base] ... One of these days I'm going to figure out why some post 1940 Owens-Illinois bottles have Duraglas on them and some don't. This 1949 bottle does not. The 4451-G is a mold or tracking number of some kind. The 1941 broken Don Diego I have has the same exact number on the base.

The image below is the "Don Diego" that most San Diego residents are familiar with. He was the official host and greeter at our county fairs between 1947 and 1984. Although known as Don Diego, his real name was Tom Hernandez. His family had been in southern California for decades. I still remember how he used to host our Boy Scout Fairs back in the 1960s. He would walk around and shake everyone's hand. It was a real treat for us kids. He passed away in 1984.

Here's my broken Don Diego, which is the only one I have ever found.    I'd say my upgrade puts this one to shame.

Congrats on the new bottle. I know what it's like to hunt the "elusive one". Unfortunately I don't know what it's like to find it. Nice looking bottle!

Hey Morb ~

Do you recall Zorro's real name? And can you name the other 1960s TV program he used to star in?  Clue ... They are "worlds" apart.

jvharp ~

Thanks. So, what's your "elusive" favorite?

For some reason, this bottle reminds me of my uncle Joe, who took his wife and 2 youngins from Red Bank, NJ to San Diego in 1958.. he got a job as an engineer with General Dynamics, lived a great life.. avid sailor/yachtsman, a real pleasant guy.. retired to Sequim, WA .. I bet he chugged a few Dons in his time!

Cyber  ~

It sounds like your uncle got around. Wasn't there a "Uncle Joe's" soda? (or something similar ?).

The San Diego Soda Works goes way back, (as seen in the picture below) and ceased operation sometime in the late 1950s. They also bottled a variety of other brands. If you look real close in the window on the right side of the building you will see about twenty different bottles/brands on display. But I can't make out a single one of them. I'm not even sure what it says on the umbrella.

Here's another San Diego Soda Works bottle that I have. But it's more common than the Don Diego and worth about $20.00.

I have a backup bottle like the one above but it has a big chunk of glass chipped off the shoulder that is about the size of a quarter.    ???

I hear ya. I'm the same way.

I just discovered there was a "Uncle Joe's Root Beer" that came in a squat amber bottle. But I can't find a decent photo of one.

Nah aside from Don Diego, I don't know the actor's name. I used to watch the Disney Zorro show in reruns quite a bit as a kid. I've always liked the character.

Morb ~

The star of the "Zorro" TV series was Guy Williams. Zorro aired on CBS between 1957 and 1959, (with later re-runs). Guy Williams also stared on the TV series "Lost In Space" which aired on CBS between 1965 and 1969.

Thanks for stopping by. The insert below is the back side of the sticker that I posted earlier. It's your free pass to fun in the sun if you ever get out to So Cal. (It was 76' degrees here this afternoon).

My elusive favorite is a blob top or hutch from Knob Lick Mo. I've never actually seen one but I do know someone who has one it just ain't for sale.
