1/2 pint double eagle flask C & I - 12/21/2007 7:14:08 PM    epgorge Posts: 2393 Joined: 12/29/2006 Status: offline Hi Bill, et al, I was hoping for help identifying this double eagle flask. I believe it to be a 1/2 pint. It is 6 1/4 inches tall and three inches across the shoulder. It has a very strong key hinge and a slug plate with C & I. Aqua, applied lip. Eagle, ribbon beaked with three arrows in each talon. Very strong strike and in very good condition. Any info on nomenclature would be appreciated. Is it Pittsburg PA glass? The item made much of a glass stopper that "came with it". I believe it is your standard Lea and Perrin top. I put it in the L&P drawer. The factories are located at Twenty-fifth, Twenty-sixth, and Twenty-seventh Streets, South Side, Pittsburgh, and consist of three furnaces. RE: 1/2 pint double eagle flask C & I - 12/21/2007 9:54:40 PM    jfcutter Posts: 53 Joined: 10/27/2004 From: Beautiful Klamath Falls, Oregon Status: offline Hi epgorge!  Nice flask and typical of the offerings from the Pittsburgh area during the Civil War era.  I think others identified the flask but I would add one more bit of information...  The Historic Bottle Website (HBW) includes an article by our group - published in Bottles & Extras a couple years ago - on the Cunningham family of glassmakers.  This includes Cunningham & Ihmsen which is what the C&I stands for...as noted by cowseatmaise.  The article is at this link if you want the most recent information on the subject:  http://www.sha.org/bottle/pdffiles/Cunningham_BLockhart.pdf One further note is that I've been in contact with a descendant of the Cunningham family (or is it Ihmsen...I can't remember without looking it up) who is currently working on a comprehensive history of the family and all their glassmaking activities.  I'm not sure what is to be done with the information - article, book or ? - but once completed, I'm sure that I could get a copy and would post the information on the HBW.  So stay tuned... Below is an interesting "strap" sided Cunningham & Ihmsen flask that I used on the HBW to illustrate somethingoranother.  For those keeping score at home, it is McKearin & Wilson's (1978) GXV-5... I was remiss in not mentioning your page and your contribution but did open this post with your name. I love the simplicity of the C&I flasks and have noted them selling relatively cheaply. I am now retired and will await your trip to this neck of the woods.  Fishing on the Williamson is pretty good in the summer....the image below is of a 27" (around 7 lb.) "red band" trout that I caught (and released) off the dock in front of our river house.  It is awaiting you... I will be around most of the summer and fall of 2008, except for a driving sojourn to Canada & Alaska (for my youngest sons graduation from HS) which will most likely be sometime between 8/20 and 9/15; specific dates have not been set. I use Rogers bandwidth to ask these questions here rather than in person, for posterity. Here is the flask I finally recieved after getting it slow boat from China. It is a clasped hands/ eagle flask, embossed on the bottom with L&W. It is a pint. I was wondering why the 13 stars on it and why the eagle has a ribbon in its beak with what appear to be segmented fingers incorporated into it. Also, is there significance to the eagle having arrows in it's talons rather than a ribbon. Peace or war time, perhaps? Thanks Bill. A prolific bottle producer. This mark is known on a very large variety of bottles and fruit jars. Toulouse claims the mark may have been used from 1851 to 1860, and then again from 1862 up to 1871, which is the year that Lorenz died. However, Lorenz and Wightman was not officially dissolved until 1874.
