Help.....I got this Holy Water today.  Can anyone help me date the bottle?  I remember a post with a bottle with a painted on date of 1600 and something that this reminded me of.  Does anyone know where it is or who wrote it?

Thanks Charlie.  I sent Sewellbottleman a PM to see if he had any info.  I do know that the IHS on the front is Roman Catholic and is a monogram for the name Jesus Christ used since the 8th century.  Im very exited to see what I can learn about it.

Something only a painter would know.  What clues led you to that conclusion?

The white curlies on the sides give it away.. they are all facing the same way, and the direction of them would have been preferred by a south paw.. unless the image is reversed due to photographic reasons, then the opposite would be the case.. (wish they had an emoticon for art geek!)

I agree - being a leftie. It just flows naturally that way on the sides.

On the front, the right side for the most part looks like it was easier for the painter than the left side - it's slightly better, in my opinion. and those little white lines in the middle at the top that curve down - that's lefty too.

Thats the one.  Thanks Woody.  The shape looks very similar to the ones in the pic with the 3 bottles in it, only the color is much nicer.

I'll take some better pics for everyone......give me a couple minuets.

Here's some better pics.  Thanks for the very generous offer Jamie, but I think I'll pass.  If it is a repro, it's a damn fine one and still worth more then I payed for it for sure.

As is often the case Doug and I find ourselves in the same boat.  I too have a very strong suspicion that the bottle is modern.

I just found this on an English museums web site.  It was made in Bohemia in 1572.  Notice the neck and the closure.  I would never guess this was 14th century.  My guess is that this would appear modern to you as well, as it would to me too.
