This is an interesting whatzit I found at my 1880's-1910 dump. I figure it has to be a bottle cap, due to the crimpled edges. It doesn't look like a modern bottle cap, but it's close enough for me to see the connection. However, the size isn't quite right. It's just barely too small to fit over the lip of an 1890's crown top I pulled from the same dump. Its edges rest around the very outer edge of the crown top's upper part. Could the metal have shrunk to a slightly smaller size? I don't know what kind of metal it is, but it doesn't seem really rusty, so I think it can't be steel. I didn't count the teeth, but it's definitely more than a modern crown cap has. Ideas?

Why, Charles my boy, I think you've figured it out! I have found an extremely rare Shape Shifting Rusty Crap-o-Matic! I must go tell the foundation... We'll be rich!

It looks to be made of copper and the center has a rust spot were an axle would be. Or like Jim said.

The ribbed edges are too rounded to be a gear or bottle cap.
