You should hope not. They're artificially irradiated.

Hello Branden,

Not all purple glass is artificially radiated as different amount of ultraviolet light and the amount of manganese in the glass batch tend to control the darkness of the color. I know for a fact that some of the Australian insulators turn nearly black purple that have been left on the lines for a 100 years and receive a large amount of ultralviolet rays from the sun. Most of the bottle collectors think of a dark purple bottle to be artificially radiated and most are, but the method that they receive their radiation is nearly impossible to determine. The three hutchs that I have pictured has one that was most likely artificially radiated, while the lighter two probably had radiation from the sun. I hope this helps you and yes, yours was probably artificially radiated.

Enjoy,

Dean

It happens because of what they add to the glass mix when they make the bottles.. they put a substance called manganese in there to get rid of the greenish color, but over time and exposure to sun, or in artificial conditions, the manganese reacts and turns the bottle purple.. it's a good way to date bottles because they pretty much stopped using it here around 1917...

I've got a really weird bottle I dug that is the same shade of purple as Dean's bottle, maybe even darker. Your bottle, carboy, is certainly irradiated. I think rarely, bottles that were intended to be cobalt were sometimes purple by accident, due to a bad glass batch. I'll get a picture. Sorry to have to tell you you're bottle's irradiated...

No old bottles were originally purple, but some new ones are made purple in their original state. The old ones that turn purple are clear, but high artificial radiation will turn some aquas some weird colors and shades of amber. Dean

I'd have agreed with you if I hadn't dug this myself... I figure it is from about 1900, made on some kind of semi automatic bottle machine. This guess is based on the age of the stuff it was found with... Nothing was machine made. I think this should've been cobalt... Luckily for me, it wasn't!

Very strange color. But there's no way it's irradiated, it's been under the ground over 100 years.
