New Years Dig 08

Decided to go out today and get my dig on starting off 08 with a bang or at lest get my shovel dirty. Went to an early house I probed out this past week but never got a chance to dig it. Opened her up and a bunch of late marbles were found about a ½ ft down 9 total. Dug down about 3-4 ft and started hitting pure 1930s-1920s stuff, tons of milks which were the only thing interesting so far. Another foot down opened up to 1890s with a bunch of hutches, blobs, meds. Nothing to interesting, another two ft down some 80’s/70’s stuff started bubbling out. At this time I was down about 7-8 ft had 3 out of the four walls exposed completely and the back wall down about 5 ft. Keep in mind I was digging this pit by my self so its getting pretty dang deep to throw dirt out so I decided to dig a little peep hole down the corner of the high side. To my surprise, a hinge mold base was unearth along with a pontil med broken and then another broken pontil. This one being a cornflower blue Iron pontil squat, one side reading dville glass works phila the other side with the slug plate gone…I wish I at lest known what it was. At this point I had no more room to move or throw dirt myself so I had to give up for the day and I didn’t want to miss New years dinner. I filled in the hole and will dig it at another time with help. Turned out to be a 3x4x? woody behind a pretty early 1800s house. Finds so far to come out include a bunch of milks all different but two, 9 marbles, a med from long branch NJ, Hutch from York, Hutch from Harrisburg, 80s blob, very crude, a three piece break early tea cup, and a few other things I have to clean up yet. Looks like this is going to be a descent hole, and the funny thing is its completely dry unlike all the other holes ive dug this time of year. Take care and happy new year to all

Digger Ry

I will post pictures tomorrow when I get more time.

Ah.... the beginning of Ry's 2008 privy dig adventures!  I think the Ry's 2007 privy dig adventure's with guest digger's easily secured a spot in forum history as one of the most active and continuous threads.  I can only wish that 2008 tops that!

Hey Steve, thanks alot for the kind words  2008 will be better, just as long as I dont get hurt or called up for more army stuff, I lost about 6 good months of digging last year but still did well. The goal this year is to do about 150-250 pits and to top the finds from last year.

So this starts the 2008 Digger Ry Privy Thread

Here are the pics from yesterday's dig

Enjoy

Ry

Heartbreaker, still might be more in there however

Sweet, hope there is...that's a philly bottle that would get some respect!  I think I might need one of those Coal & Ice pints.........I'll check, maybe we can work something out if so.

Does that say PHILADa like one I have or PHILA?

PHILA is what it looked like so I'm wondering if someone has any idea of the year breakdown between PHILA and PHILADa or if they were used concurrently.  If I had to quess I'd say PHILA is older.

Hey Ry ...
Nice way to start the new year!in a hole in the ground hahaha! cool stuff, sorry about the broken blue. You got the whole year ahead of you.I hope you hit that (good) one.
My goal is not to dig many pits but to dig a few that are Killa!and I have a good feeling we will. My new years dig starts Saturday in the yards we dug those 70s stoneys in, the houses are 1854 and we haven't hit any that old yet,we have high hopes because of those broken flasks. On word we go. Rick

1-3-08

Today was the first day back doing my military thing, but it was a short day and I ended up meeting with Mat and George to go for a short dig to see if we could get into something. Almost right away we found a pit, but it totally looked ABD. The pit was sinking like crazy and had a large weed bush growing out of it. We opened it up and the first few feet were horrible, rat nest debris, roots and brick everywhere and this point still didn’t know if it was dug or not. About an hr later we finally got that menacing shrug out of the way after a lot of hard work and cursing. Now the pit was free and ready to be hit hard. I jumped in the hole and took it down about 3 ft, during that time a blob beer popped out, then another, and another, then like 4 more. Matt now jumped in and pulled out just another 10 or so haha. George is pulling buckets at this time, he was the only one that wasn’t cold because he was sporting those huge overalls that would fit a 400 lbs gorillaman. The age of the pit during this time was TOC, I jumped back in and started getting some more random bottles, a few whiskey, a few slicker meds, and then I saw it. A HUGE greenish bulbous neck, I knew right away DEMIJOHN but was it whole??? I was like no way, another one, no way…I dug one a month back and was completely blown away that it was whole. It is extremely hard to dig a demi out of a dump let alone a pit. I exposed one of the sides of the demi but couldn’t tell if it was whole or not. I started to shovel out around the sides more and then gently scratched more dirt away but the bottle kept going and going. So far it looked whole, I tried to budge it but it wouldn’t move. Then I noticed it was completely filled with water!  At that second I yelled up, ITS WHOLE, ITS FILLED WITH WATER!!! I was flippin at this point. I slowly uncover more and more but again, still wont budge, it is resting right along one of the brick walls and bricks are all along the sides of it. After about 10 mins of meticulously excavating this thing out, she came out weighing about 25-35 lbs filled with water. I immediately look at the base hoping for a pontil scar. And sure enough there it was, a nice open pontil. It was just a great experience pulling that monster out of the dark depth. Well it really wasn’t that deep, might have been down about 5.5-6 ft at this time. I took it down another foot or so pulling out a few more bottles still TOC era, then Matt jumped in again. I think he pulled up a few more bottles but I cant really remember. I was running on 40 some hrs without sleep so I was a little out of it. It got very dark and much colder so we decided we would filler her in and finish it the next day. Now this was the coldest day I have dug all year. When we started it was about 20 with a wind chill in the single digits. The bottles we found we put in a plastic tub, they were all frozen together by the ashy dirt that was still attached to them when we left. Also to show how cold it was. Digger George gave me a bottle of water out of his backpack about half way through the dig. It was mildly cold, not as cold as you would pull it out of the frig, but lightly chilled. I drank about half of it, jumped in the pit, got out 15 mins later and it was FROZEN haha. Man it was cold when we left it was about 15 deg. Anyway, the finds for the day include about 20-25 blobs from philly and surrounding areas, an OP olive 2.5 gallon demi, two stoneware pots, ceramic cake mold, a few crapper bromos, some other TOC bottles, a pack of matches, and some other stuff im forgetting. All in all we pulled about 50 bottles out maybe more, and there will be more to come, I am hoping anyway. That is all for now, pictures will be posted later and I will update everyone on how the dig goes when we finish it.  Digger Ry

Hi Ryan,When the weather gets  decent and I start pounding the pavement again lets see, maybe we can have you guys here for a dig and then do the same in Pa! I will tell you two things-one is that you dig alot more soda's out of those philly pits and the second is  that if we get you to come here and dig I may "bug" you about the Costars(only kidding,I'll try not to!). My buddy Charlie Clarks wife has cancer and since Charlie introduced me to Brooklyn  digging a long time ago I  like to have him when we dig.Besides, the man is a virtual book about city digging, that is to say he's good! Anyhow say hello to the Costar's for me,good luck in your digging and if you would like to see a few of my buggers go on to the part of the forum that says wanted buy trade sell and you'll see a few of my favorite goodies,Best Regards,Kev

Today, George and I finished the hole. Matt could not make it because he had other arrangements. This time the temp wasn’t as bad it was about 32-30 deg and no wind. We dug from about 7pm-12am. It was very slow digging because we hit the pure loam layer and it was very very sticky wet muck, there was about 2 ft of ashy/loam artifact layer, and below that about 5-6 ft of pure loam almost completely without any artifacts. The age of the pit never really changed pretty much 1890s stuff the whole way. I dug the rest of the pit to the bottom and george pulled buckets the entire time, each bucket weighed about 60lbs maybe more, I don’t know how george did it, but we didn’t have a ladder to rotate pulling and digging. The pit ended up being about 14 ft, it was a round bricker, and the bottles/artifacts included, about 4 local meds, a bunch of whiskeys, 2 stoneware pots, 5 lids, tea set, 2 tooth bushes, bone brush, shot glass, mustard jar, a bitters from philly, Coalgate NY bottle with contents, small ink with ground lip w/ cork, and some other random bottles/artifacts. Not one marble this time which was a first for me. Anyway Im beat, and I am sure george was beat. It was a stinky wet muck hole and we each went home with a nice bucket of bottles just nothing real old. The original people from this house were some hard core drinkers, must have liked to party it up. I will post pictures will follow shortly. Until next time
