1-3-08 Today was the first day back doing my military thing, but it was a short day and I ended up meeting with Mat and George to go for a short dig to see if we could get into something. Almost right away we found a pit, but it totally looked ABD. The pit was sinking like crazy and had a large weed bush growing out of it. We opened it up and the first few feet were horrible, rat nest debris, roots and brick everywhere and this point still didn’t know if it was dug or not. About an hr later we finally got that menacing shrug out of the way after a lot of hard work and cursing. Now the pit was free and ready to be hit hard. I jumped in the hole and took it down about 3 ft, during that time a blob beer popped out, then another, and another, then like 4 more. Matt now jumped in and pulled out just another 10 or so haha. George is pulling buckets at this time, he was the only one that wasn’t cold because he was sporting those huge overalls that would fit a 400 lbs gorillaman. The age of the pit during this time was TOC, I jumped back in and started getting some more random bottles, a few whiskey, a few slicker meds, and then I saw it. A HUGE greenish bulbous neck, I knew right away DEMIJOHN but was it whole??? I was like no way, another one, no way…I dug one a month back and was completely blown away that it was whole. It is extremely hard to dig a demi out of a dump let alone a pit. I exposed one of the sides of the demi but couldn’t tell if it was whole or not. I started to shovel out around the sides more and then gently scratched more dirt away but the bottle kept going and going. So far it looked whole, I tried to budge it but it wouldn’t move. Then I noticed it was completely filled with water! At that second I yelled up, ITS WHOLE, ITS FILLED WITH WATER!!! I was flippin at this point. I slowly uncover more and more but again, still wont budge, it is resting right along one of the brick walls and bricks are all along the sides of it. After about 10 mins of meticulously excavating this thing out, she came out weighing about 25-35 lbs filled with water. I immediately look at the base hoping for a pontil scar. And sure enough there it was, a nice open pontil. It was just a great experience pulling that monster out of the dark depth. Well it really wasn’t that deep, might have been down about 5.5-6 ft at this time. I took it down another foot or so pulling out a few more bottles still TOC era, then Matt jumped in again. I think he pulled up a few more bottles but I cant really remember. I was running on 40 some hrs without sleep so I was a little out of it. It got very dark and much colder so we decided we would filler her in and finish it the next day. Now this was the coldest day I have dug all year. When we started it was about 20 with a wind chill in the single digits. The bottles we found we put in a plastic tub, they were all frozen together by the ashy dirt that was still attached to them when we left. Also to show how cold it was. Digger George gave me a bottle of water out of his backpack about half way through the dig. It was mildly cold, not as cold as you would pull it out of the frig, but lightly chilled. I drank about half of it, jumped in the pit, got out 15 mins later and it was FROZEN haha. Man it was cold when we left it was about 15 deg. Anyway, the finds for the day include about 20-25 blobs from philly and surrounding areas, an OP olive 2.5 gallon demi, two stoneware pots, ceramic cake mold, a few crapper bromos, some other TOC bottles, a pack of matches, and some other stuff im forgetting. All in all we pulled about 50 bottles out maybe more, and there will be more to come, I am hoping anyway. That is all for now, pictures will be posted later and I will update everyone on how the dig goes when we finish it. Digger Ry
