We finished this monster pit today,we bottomed out at 25 feet.Every privy is a gamble but when you dig one this deep with only 2 guys, its more of a gamble. Is it loaded? or is it dipped to the max? Be-leave  it or not this one was dipped pretty good.,that deep and dipped!Just goes to show ya,you never know until you hit mother earth, she just happened to  be 25 feet down this time.
We got a few odds and ends, pipes, a few marbles, and some common bottles from the 80s ,but the best thing I got out of this dig were the pictures,I love the way deep brick and stone liners look. This one was stone from the bottom up to about 10 feet then 10 feet of brick then 5 foot of stone at the top.A real work of art crap hole If I go away with some nice pictures for my web site im happy.Don't get me wrong I dig for bottles not pictures, but you get what you get in this hobby.
As we were ready to wrap it up today,a guy looked over the fence from the alley,Wilson?   nooooo
The guy asked what we were doing, when I said privy digging he said "ohhh I should have one in my yard" turns out he was from the preservation society and was willing to help us get some of the vacant buildings they have in the city in the historic district. It always comes around.
Here are a few pix of the 25 foot toilet.

Man, Rick, I don't envy you those sparse "depth charges". Luckily, those are very few and far between around here, except in a few cities. Most of ours are 6-12' and easy to dig in the nice loam.

It always amazes me on how they built those things with limited tech.
Did they put up a frame work inside and then put in the brick, and remove the wood after? How many men died from caveins back in the day?

Don't feel bad,I don't I would rather dig that deep for bottles I could get at a  flea market then buy them at a flea market
Now if i never dug a "good" bottle before in my life, man would I be depressed. If you never dug a privy you have no clue what I mean

No Gordan, they were Masons who built those brick and stone liners. They had other workers dig the hole and the "Masons" did the stone/brick work.Like I said, it was a work of art.

Gordon,...I'm pretty sure they dug the hole out oversized and laid up the stone or brick,...filling in around the outside as they came up...(Which makes it an even more monumental task!)... Someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this...

Great pix, SickRick! At least you got a few things. Those deep pits are a hell of a workout. I've only been over 20 feet twice, and fortunately both of those pits were loaded. I'm sure there are a few "deep empties" around here, though. Hopefully, they're all under buildings or parking lots now

The last three pits I have dug were empty, unless you count those few 1920s slickers and busted sodas we pulled out of that wet stoneliner when you and the Badger came up. I have a few places eyeballed, I just have to find time to get them lined up and dig them.  ~Jim

They laid it just as if they were laying a wall above ground, except no motor in the privy walls. They made sure the bricks were tight,(thank god)
The size of some of those stones at the bottom were huge.No doubt they lowered them down with ropes, the same way we pull them up when they are in the pits,I am sure they found a few digging the thing out also.
The real work was digging holes like that through (natural earth).
