interesting bottle, dont see many pontil marked bottles with base embossing.

The only Bickford medicine I can think of is Bickford's liver compound from Malden Mass. That was Mrs Clark Bickford.

While its possible it could be something like Liver Syrup I would have to assume its a food bottle until proven otherwise. That is a classic sauce form and for the most part products matched bottle forms. Always exceptions out there though. If it was a med , the odd form would make it that much more desirable. Good luck researching it.

Try searching for lemon syrup , that was a product in mid 18th cent...

What an incredible bottle! Is the base embossed or debossed?

I think it would be lemon syrup. I checked all the A. Bickfords over 20 in the 1860 census.  About 90% were farmers. I did find Alphonse Bickford, age 47, in Strafford, New Hampshire who was a physician.

That base looks de-bossed. That's an early example. They used to refire the base and then press the base against a embossed iron plate. That one is early and crude. Nice bottle.

Thanks for the all the input.I am suprised no one has seen this bottle before.Lemon syrup sounds like a good
bet to me.The bottle is very large, just a little smaller than a qt. blob beer.

The base is embossed and the pontil is still rough and not refired. It could not be tubular because of the the
texture and is broken up but it is sharp.

Hopefully someone will no some more about it.

I'm wondering if it might be a British import?
Looks like a sticky ball pontil like you see on some of the early import bottles.
May make it a bit harder to research. Take a look at where the other food bottles with that odd kickup style come from and it may give you a clue.

I notice that looking at old druggist texts there are references to terms such as L. SYRUP MARSH MALLOW.  I havent figured what the L. is for. May be something obvious I am just missing.

Matt, Sorry I didn't notice your last posts.I wondered about it being English too but have seen sauces and whiskeys with stairstepped, pontilled bases with the same type of pontil. They were American so who knows. You may be onto something with the "L." preceeding other words.I hope someone will know know something about it.I am stumped.I don't intend on selling it so I have nothing but time to find out about it.

Hi Gunther.

A M Bickford of Adelaide, Australia  did have a branch in New York but do not think this was established until around 1900.
The above bottle posted by Doug appears to have a typical U S style lip and have not seen this lip on any bottle from England.
The Bickford family was quite large and there are wine bottles with applied seals from the late 1700,s from their family estate in Devon, England
