A long, long time ago in a land that was long, long ago South Carolina was a leading state. Ney did I say progressive, but a leader all the same. We had the first RR produced presidents and national leaders. This is all before Strom Thurmond, but not by much. Well one day an uncle of  mine my Uncle Paul and some of his pals decided that they too where above all and were afraid of change, well sir they started a little war.

Well sir that was not a good idea. One day this evil, evil man named William T. Sherman did I mention he was evil came by. Man he burnt every thing. Why even burnt Atlanta fore he got here. Dey was all mad at them Carolina boys for starting this mess,"Gonna be worse here than all" they said. They went to my Uncle Pauls house and set it afire too. Uncle Mose and Miss Prissy put it out.

They missed the Merrits and Barr plantations. Passed by the Halls [me] we didn't need slaves had 14 sons and we made rifles. Well they went on to Columbia and set it afire. Burnt the whole place they did. They even burnt our State House It would have been better if that had let us finnish our new one. This is looking down Main street from the State House that was under construction. Not much left is it?

See them big rocks. That's granite and marble. Tenn. marble. The original plans called for marble coulums on the interior. Even had a name for it. Had us a bunch of hired stone masons. From Itlay they were. Well this Sherman feller went and busted up all them coulums. Just went and wrecked everything.

Now well jet 135 years to 1995. The fine Goverment of S.C. decided we better earhquake proof our State House. After all they didn't get it finnished till sometime around 1910. Got me a job there I did. One day while slaving away I found this. It's the base to one of the coulums. I got my bolt bag filled w/ what I wanted and went and told the boss. I was possed to do that first......but. I found in the area above and the resident archeoligist told us what it was. We were supposed to turn in all we found. A bud found some cannon balls that were fired at said building turned them in and never seen again. Ok that's it. Not a bottle and I didn't dig it but I did find it.

When I found it it was nice and white really slick. When my house burnt it got cooked. This is one of three things I really wanted to salvage. Is there any way I can get it back white and polished? I just thought of something creepy. That fire was 10 yr. ago tonite. Something creepier two days before Christmas I told Paula that Dean Martin was the coolest their was. Huh Rick? Cary Grant is too cool too. Anna says "Who?"

When it comes to Dean the word smoothe comes to mind. Smoothe like ice son. Look up cool in any copy of the Lobeypedia Britanicia an you'l find a picture of Deno. As for Cary he's on my top three favorite movie star list. Good looks and a sophisticated sense of humor, the man had it all. The word movie star really doesn't apply today does it. I wouldn't give you a bucket of piss for a Leonardo DiCaprio or a Justine Timberlake. Johnny Depp is the closest you'll come to a real artist. As for actors De Niro is pretty flawless.

Now concerning your marble there. Restoring it to it's original smoothness is impossible i think. I based this soley on a very vague recollection on an article I read somewhere about burnt marble. I would still build it a nice four sided glass case (1/4" plate) in cherry maybe quarter sawn oak, hide a little low voltage lighting in it somewhere. You got yourself an important piece of southern history there.

I like the way you wind a yarn...  Always good reading when I see you put up a post.  Thanks for the story.  I do not know of anyway to clean burnt marble but burnt marble is used to make pop!  Very cool burnt or not...

Jim Reeves? Ok smooth. I have some and Dean. Had a lot more till my tec buddy wiped my C? drive. Now  Deno was all cool. The way he walked -talked carried that Old Fashion and smoke.Look at the above and tell me who ya gonna hang w/. I understand that cool comes in many colors and I think Lee Marvin is a tuff cool, Gary Cooper an every man cool. Groucho Marx I don't know, but he was cool as hell. My hero Redneck cool David Allen Coe. Cagney, Bogart  and Gable fine actors however, but not cool.  John Wayne? Ask me how I feel about him.

Ahhh now the Duke...he's cut from another bolt altogether. You know how young girls today look at those sickly models and aspire to be like them? It's the same with guys when it comes to Wayne. I'm not talking the last couple generations of young men. They don't know s**t from jello pudding.
