Another one bites the dust. I brought my friend Chuck out to probe for privies today. He has the bottle bug big time. He's a big strong guy, so he can move some serious dirt. It was a day full of digging, no privies found, just odds and ends. Still fun.
I had one permission, but they weren't home.  While I waited for them to get home, I cold called another permission. We probed there for an hour or so, but no luck at all, just shards and fill.
Then we went to the permission house, this early 1800s house that was originally a tavern.

We had a feeling that the privy was on this side of the house.  We probed for a while and found some weird deep open cavity under the ground that opened up strangely, like a well with no liner.  There was no trash or ash in it.  We noticed a foul smell in the air, like something dead.  Then I noticed a blue cooler right near where we were digging. There were flies swarming all over it .  I moved closer, and Chuck warned me " dont open it Bram!".  My morbid curiosity got the best of me.
It was about six inches deep of maggot filled cod fish from a fishing trip probably two weeks ago.
The odor that came from that cooler when I opened it almost knocked me over. Maybe we'll try the other side of the house!

Here's Chuck trying to figure out what the opening down there is.  And trying to stomach the bad odor in the air.

The home owner told us there was a trap door in the old barn, which led to a crawl space. Chuck is a carpenter by trade, and he managed to pry open the trap door, which had to be slid sideways first, then lifted up.  He crawled down in there, I was worried about rats and snakes, but he was not going to be stopped.  Once he determined the coast was clear, I joined him.  OK I'm a pussy.:)

I stuck the camera down in the hole to take this one. Chuck said he could see something up on the ledge that looked like an ink bottle. Turned out to be a pewter lid of some sort. false alarm

There were lots of granite cut pillars ( fence posts) and early lumber and barrel staves, but no bottles.  Chuck was rumaging through the dusty debris with a flashlight. We had seen nothing close to a bottle yet. Then Chuck tosses me this shard. It kept us searching for another hour to find anything else.  This could have been a Townsends, or some other early New England medicine  ouch!

Pretty meager reward for all that trouble. But it will just make the mother load taste that much sweeter someday. Chuck got a small wooden bird call device, really cool. We also got a pipe, and a very good ceramic tile, marked Chelsea Mass patd 1878 on the back, and a couple of jar corks, which I think go on wax sealer fruit jars.
We have another permission for Wednesday, wish us luck!
Happy digging

Mike, have you ever dug any tiles? I've researched this green one we found, and it appears to be a good piece. I've found pieces of tile in my TOC dumps but not a whole one like this.
