Does anybody know about how long a privy would be in service before they dug another one, as far as years go.And say you found 4 in one yard. How far apart are they from each other.

Thanks.
CHRIS.

depends on were you live. but heres how it is in my neck of the woods. privys lasted 10 or 15 years around here.backyards had a fair amount of room and there were plenty of places to locate them so they didnt dig them deep. also the water table is fairly high and if you dig to deep you end up with a well. if you dig in town where there were little back yards you might find one real big deep one, because of space limitations. i usuall find them 4 or 5 feet apart . i have olso found newer ones dug over or partially into old ones. and as close to each other as a foot or so. but usually all in one area of the yard or in line with each other.i check the age of the house and count on 1 for every ten years after that untill running water came to that area of town and that is usually pretty close guess on how many i will find in that yard. you are just going to have to figure out what you are dealing with in your area . but i bet it will not be much different.most here are about 4 feet square and 6 or 7 feet deep . i have dug as deep as 10 or 11 feet and 6 to 8 feet dia.be real carefull if you go real deep !! i have had a few collapse . heep a eye on the sides and if you see cracks appear get up out and check before digging further.

Here in Richmond alot of privies were dipped and used for extensive periods of time. The last privy we dug had never been capped and went from 1900' s on top to late 1700' s at the bottom. A nice brick lined 15 footer. I have noticed that in the wealthier sections you have less privies but they are larger and deeper than the others. Most of the yards having 4 or more privies are usually shallower pits and are clay lined rather than brick .
