I acquired this semi rare tubular shaped embossed ANDERSONS COUGH DROPS on one side in a nice raised panel and PREPARED BY J MELLEN on the opposite side in the same type of panel.I had forgotten totally about this bottle until yesterday. This is a very old cough medicine bottle from New York state possibly made at the Utica Glass works between 1825 and 1830.Guntherhess posted a nice ad in the Swaims panacea post yesterday regarding this bottle. It seems Mr. Mellen was being pursued by the founder and patent owner of Andersons cough drops who never gave Mr. Mellen permission to manufacture and distribute the product. This made me realize I had one of these. You don't see them to often in the bottle market

I believe this is one of Andersens oldest cure bottles. The bottle is in great shape and only has a miniscule amount of flaking and chipping
on the flared lip.The bottle is loaded with potstones indicative of its early age and suggestive that the glass was from the bottom of the barrel. It has the New York State blue aqua look to the color of the glass and it stands 4 and 3 quarters inches tall by 1 and a quarter inches round.

More likely made at the Mt Vernon Glassworks than Utica. Bottles were their main product, most of the other glassworks focused on window glass to feed the rapid growth in after the Erie Canal came through. Prior to 1840s MVG was making most of the the Upstate NY bottles.

I concur with Mark, the maker was most likely the Mount Vernon Glass Company.  I have not found any shards (yet) of the Anderson Cough Drops bottle but strongly suspect them to be a MtVGC product.  An interesting side note is that Anderson Cough Drops were heavily advertised in a Rome, NY newspaper (14 miles from Vernon) in the early 1830s.
The Utica Glass Works was in the business of making crown window glass.  The Utica Glass Works did not stay in business very long and was eventually purchased by the Oneida Glass Factory (makers of cylinder window glass) in Vernon, NY.  The Oneida Glass Factory was in the same village as MtVGC (other side of town) but they were not associated with one another.  Oneida eventually closed down in the (late 1830s early 40s) and was moved to Cleveland, NY by A. Landgraff & Sons.
