Was walking through the park across the street from us to get my son from school for an Orthodontist appt.
I hear a noise a few feet away from me, look over and see this huge hawk take off and start calling. We didn't see it when we were coming home. Later I went through the park and to daughter's bus stop to meet her.
As I was telling her about it, I pointed to where it was and lo and behold..there it was again.
It flew away and daughter and I saw that there's quite a large nest made of sticks on the ground....Only hawk in Michigan that makes a nest on the ground is a Northern Harrier (marsh hawk). Now I have to be careful when MD'ing.
I'll get pics next time I go past it.

Was this recently? Very unusual for them to be nesting this late in the year,& also odd that they would choose a park. Were there eggs or young inthe nest?

Marsh hawks are lovely birds, sadly they seem to be declining in numbers here.

Yah I thought it was odd they were still here..From what I've read they're done hatching in June at the latest...31day incubation period. No eggs in the nest and haven't seen any other marsh hawks.
The park, which has 100' tall pine trees, is near a swampy/marshy lake. And she built the nest on a slope next to one of the large trees. Yesterday when daughter and I were coming back and saw her, she took off and was flying pretty low over neighbor's fence and we saw her fly to the lake edge (man made lake from the mining industry at turn of the century now just a water pit with marsh around the edges). Although she scared the living crap out of me with our first encounter, gorgeous bird to see take off and fly.. (almost as cool as driving down the road and seeing a bald eagle perched on the body of a dead deer snackin' on some carrion).

We have numerous harrier nests on our properties. I have encountered them on several occassions and even had to drive a chopper around their nests and cone them off like we do kildeer nests on the roads. Most are long done by now, but I have noticed quite a few little striper quail chicks in the past days. In some cases this is a third hatch for them No raptors are nest active at this time, with most who migrate preparing to do so.

I looked today and no bird and the nest was all caved in. Looks like she might have moved on.

So..looks like I lied....Haven't seen a hawk in days.

Today I walked daughter through the park to her bus stop and on the way back my WPG (wirehaired pointing griffon) starts going nuts and she was sniffing the ground like scooby doo after clues. She gets to a tree and is literally shaking on point.

I look up and see one soaring about 50 feet overhead. As we're coming out of the park and walking up to the street to cross, there are 4 of them soaring in a huge circle!! Took some pics, but hard to get a real good zoom on them when they're soaring so quickly....

I was in my driveway taking pics so the house blocks the other two.

Here's the second pic of another one. These birds must have a 3' wingspan.. Gorgeous to look at.....Having them so close is a bit unnerving.

A couple months ago, I was in my back yard walking towards the side yard when I saw/heard some birds squawkin' and flappin' some serious excitement in a forsythia bush when alluva sudden this small hawk exits the bush in a big hurry flying right at me like I wasn't there. I had to move to the right about a foot or he would have crashed into my shoulder! LOL!

dang! Matrix dodging bullets kind of stuff there.

yesterday I was walking through the park to get daughter from the bus and as I was looking for hawks to come chomp on me, I heard a noise to my right. Looked over and there were 2 doe and 2 babies walking with them about 10' from me.

I kept walking and they kept the same distance until we hit the road and they ran into someone's yard. Deer are crazy all over here. Picked daughter up from school one day and near a large stand of pines we saw 40-60 deer hauling butt across the street. They sleep in people's yards, and some people will hand feed them. (which is why they're all over..too many people feeding them in their yard).

Deer, especially Whitetails, are more abundant than they were even 50 yrs ago and certainly far more numerous than they ever were in the past. Kind folks insistence on feeding them only exacerbates the problems with them. Some areas are going so far as to have predation hunts, an idea which needs to catch on everywhere where deer are overpopulating. Feed 'em lead, not lettuce.

There is no hunting. Where I live I feed um corn and bread. Where my dad lives. Lead is their main diet

Caldigr2,
They do predation hunts up here almost every year. Little ones grow up a bit, people still put food out, or leave their garden open and it starts all over again.

They also give out farm permits. You can take pretty much any deer that's on your property. My friend would have people over and just have a big old turkey shoot because he'd have so many of them eating his stuff.
