I'd say it was from the 1940's or 1950's.

With corks-late 1800s to early 1920s. With screw lids early 1920s until 1940s. Some can get fairly fancy, with slug plate lettering and such.

Thanks,

I thought it might be a little older, like 20's. I plan on going back to the site this weekend if possible.

Anything at all embossed on the bottom? Seam through the lip means machine-made, but the base looks way crooked in your pix.....

Regardless of date, it's a classic looking bottle.

I'll look at the base when I get home. Dont remember that there were any distinquishing marks.

There is a pooling of glass in the bottle at the base that makes it look crooked. You can see it on the right side of the picture. I believe this is one I dug out of the side of the creek. It was on it's side, pooled area down. I presumed over time, the glass ran as it has on the windows of my 90 year old house.

Really enjoying all the help and information here. A great site. I thought I was just one of a handful of oddballs out there roaming the creeks and riverbeds. No, there is a whole army!

Welcome to the army of privy diggers, muck divers & flea market hounds! As to the "pooled glass" thing, my house was built in 1917, and at first I thought the windows had "run" with time to produce that waviness, but I've been told that that happened on the day the glass was made, not over time. I'm pretty sure the bottom of a bottle can't just run over to one side, no matter how long it sits on it's side. I think the extra glass on one side is a manufacturing defect. If I'm wrong, I'm sure somebody will correct it...

Huh. That is interesting. I live in an area with alot of old houses and have heard the running glass story fairly constantly. It always made sense to me, so I thought it might happen with bottles too. The glass is somewhat of a semi-solid substance that has some amount of fluidity to it. There is a correct word for it. Poly-morhpous? Not sure. Would be interested in hearing what others thought of this. Maybe the chem majors.

Thanks for the welcome. It is a fascinating and fun hobby.

I looked on the bottom of this bottle and there is no mark but a very small "s" or "2" towards the bottom edge.

The pooling of glass in certain places on bottles is caused by poor handling during the cooling process. Still happens today with machines and computers doing all the work. I have several bottles that are very common that I kept because they have these defects. The wavy effect you see in old bottles [ whittling ] and window pains is caused by the uncontrolled cooling of the glass. Today chemicals, controlled cooling and pressure rolling prevent this from happening. If you ever get the chance to tour a glass factory of any kind, check it out, it will blow your mind.
