About 5 weeks ago, I saw an online classified ad saying miscellaneous bottles for sale. I responded and asked for a picture, and the person said she'd send one the next day. I never got the picture and basically forgot about it. Then, a month later, she sent three pictures. Here's one of them.

I was pretty excited. I arranged to meet her and went there yesterday. She said she didn't remember where she got them, but picked them up here and there as decorative items. She left them dirty because she thought that might add to the value. She really didn't know anything about bottles and had no clue how old they were or what they were used for. They were in a box in her basement for the last 8 years or so, and she almost sold them at her yard sale earlier this summer, but forgot to put them out.

Here's the group I took home and cleaned. Left to right: junk Ball jar, Wichert Chicago ketchup (cracked), Cooper's New Discovery, unlisted blackglass Pittsburgh double eagle, A. Steinmetz beer, small milk bottle, three stoneware bottles (all have some damage), G. Eble soda, a label only pain killer, and a black glass ale with the date 1858 just barely visible on the label.

A picture of the double eagle. It's very crude, with dents, bulges, and folds in the glass. The folds even protude on the inside as fins. Oh yeah, I bought the whole group for $40.

Is that a crack in the Pitts flask or mold mark?  Do you want to sell, trade or keep it?

That's one of the folds. I'm going to keep this for sure.

Good Job finding those Kent!  Finding them that way is almost as good as digging them up as far as  I'm concerned.

Nice going..that's good advice.  Love the flask, wonder what it's worth.?  Pontiled or smooth base?

I'm not sure what it's worth either. It's a smooth base, but the glass is pebbly and has three indentations, probably from the snap case.

I found out a little info on your flask..On pg. 483 in American Glass, there is a drawing of your flask.   On the next page, it is written about as follows:  circa 1860-1875..listed as pint, clear deep olive-green. Also occurs in quart.  What a great find! If I can dig up more info, I'll post it.

I'll try to take a picture in a few days. There are some areas so thick and dark that sunlight won't shine through. Lower in the flask the glass is thinner and it looks dark olive with strong light behind it.
