Got these growing around your house? I don't know how far North these plants range, but they're all over the South. I've pulled many out of the corn and soy beans as a weed.

They have nice flowers that bumblebees love. They look like passion flowers I've heard, but I think these are different. Everyone knows these are maypops.

Then you open them up and eat the seed like a pomagranite. These are really good they tast a lot like cantalope only sweeter. Try it sometimes.

Looks like honey don't it ? It's not. What it is is scuppernong jelly, didn't use enough Sure-Jell so what I got is scuppanine syrup. See some people still take the time to do this, all it takes is some effort.

Which brings me to this. Buster please do not take this the wrong way because I think you feel the same way I do. It's that bananna puddin, man I can't belive you let your fellow firefighters eat that fake bananna puddin. I've got a thing against this stuff, as a matter of fact I left my third ol' lady because of this. All I ask for was a real bannana puddin and you know what I got served. My friends know this as the puddin incident and think it's funny. I'm glad you don't understand why they like it. I guess they have never had real bananna pudding before. Let me tell ya I love it. My mama fixed me one two weeks ago man let me tell ya I love REAL bananna pudding. My grandma fixed me one as she was dying, wanted me to have one more[favorite grandchild] before she went. I'll get my Ma to make one you come to the Columbia show in Feb. and I'll give it to ya. I guess the young people never had grandmas that made bananna pudding, thats so sad. Warm out of the oven w/ lots of Vanillawafers w/ or w/out marange. I turned my 3 yo grandson on to some and he says "More". The perfect meal my Mama makes me for my birthday every year. Day old beefstew-day old field peas w/ okra-fried okre-hoecake and warm bananna pudding. Like I said don't take this the wrong way.

Dang it Pat, you beat me to the maypop post.  I found some growing in the overgrown garden (too much digging and foruming to maintain a garden this year).  I was going to find the correct botanical name before posting.  Oh well, great post. I didn't know you could eat them though. I'm gonna let some dry out and try them.
I totaly agree with you on the banana pudding.  Well after I took over the reigns as the new Volunteer Fire Chief, the wife made one of those bake in the oven, marangue covered banana puddings and they turned up their noses saying they preferred that instant kind.  Doesn't figure because there is no comparison in my book. I guess this younger generation grew up on everything instant.
Take a look at this persimmion tree.  It's so loaded down the limbs will probably break before all these get ripe.  Got any good persimmion recipies?  Folks probably didn't know you coud eat these either.

Wow, Maypops...right I haven't seen these since I was a kid in Louisiana, growing wild. Eat many back in the day. This brings back many memories.

Crazy I had them growin in my backyard in Philly and we had fights with them when they were soft. Then I moved and no more fights. I'll have to get some seeds and grow em again. I know they grow like 20 ft up a fence during a summer so I should have some good eatin by the end of next summer. THAANNNKKKKSSSSS!
