Hi, I'm so happy to have found this site. We are in the process of selling lots and lots of old stuff collected by my husband's grandmother over her lifetime. She was an A&C dealer until the age of 92 and she has a ton of things we can't identify. The bottle I hope someone can tell me about is one grandmother dug up in the 1960's at Cypress Bayou in Jefferson, TX. It is round, approximately 3" x 5", dark amber, has a glass stopper, a cross on one side and smooth on the other and is attached to a heavy chain. There is a crusty white substance on the cross side. I don't know what it is. I haven't tried to clean the bottle at all. I hope the picture can help someone tell me what it was used for and how old it is? Thanks very much.

Wow...... very unique.
I can't say that I've ever seen a bottle like this before.
If I were to venture a guess I would say that it may be a Holy Water bottle that was used for traveling. Hence, the chain.
The bottle may have been hung around the neck with the chain to ward off evil spirits.
Usually a cross is signified as religious in origin.
Looks to be from the civil war period or before.
Can you show a picture of the bottom of the bottle???

Jumpin Jeebus I think you may have something here white! Woody may be right about the Holy Water. I'd guess the chain went around the waist though, how long is it? The solid parts of the chain where stamped out of the hollow pieces. I don't know when that technology came about but I agree again with The Woodster, Civil War era or a bit earlier. I'd bet my hat that it's European. Italian maybe.

Can you reduce the size of the picture and repost it? It's hard to take it all in and get a feel for it. Very very, cool piece.
Rich.

The chain is about 34" long. I don't know if it would have been worn around the waist because it doesn't have a latch. thanks.

Very very nice bottle. The white substance may be the remains of some type of paint. Could be designed to wear across the chest or over one shoulder. Looks very old as well, maybe pre 1800.

I'm thinking Mexican-American war.
1848.
This may have been carried on the battlefield to give last rites to fallen soldiers.

Have to say it is one of the most interesting bottles I've seen posted! Right, don't clean it! Since it might be a religious artifact, maybe a Priest, especially an older one, might know what it is, or might know someone who is familiar with older artifacts. Some older Catholic churches or cathedrals even have their own historical museums. Thanks for posting it.

But does the chain have the age your talking about? Not to sure about this one. I had one like this one, but no chain, same pontil, it looks mex to me.
it is a holy water bottle.
but the age of the chain is the key to it's age. many repros were done in the ealry years,

I guess I agree with Bottletumbler, that chain looks alot newer than mid 1800's. The glass looks very old from the pics though, the pontil mark is kinda unusual looking to me also but I am far from an expert on that era of glassIs the glass dark amber held up to a light, it looks like it has a reddish color to it on my computer, regardless of what it is or how old it is...........that is a cool bottle

Maybe a cocaine addict had it to put around his neck and anytime he craved some he just took this little thing out and snorted it. He probably lost it on a binge one day until it was found. Can anyone think of any medicine that you would desperately need that you would have to put it around your neck?

Yours looks dark red. I saw a light blue one, same style and white stuff, no stopper or chain, sell on ebay last year. I tried to buy it... thought it was ancient Roman, lol. I remember it went for about $100, but then the buyer might have thought it was Roman too.

How about the bolttle being old (maybe did not have a chain) and was added later or an old rusty chain was replaced.
