Hi everyone this is my first post so bear with me.  I recently went to a job site in Annapolis, Maryland as the on site inspector for construction.  The job is located near a creek and apparently was filled in over many years.  When the contractor started digging to install storm drains we encountered an ash layer up to 10' thick and low and behold it was filled with bottles.  They date from the 1880's to the 1920's.  Now if you know about construction you know there is no finese about it.  The largest track hoe is used to dig up 5 cubic yards of soil at a time.  It is amazing that any intact bottles make it to the surface at all.  Over the last month I have picked up over 100 bottles.  I plan on hopefully placing photos of some of the bottles soon.  This was just to let everybody know I am a new member of antique bottles and hopefully will get some advice and knowledge from you other members.  Just today I found a Healy & Bigelow's Kickapoo Indian Oil, a brown American Hair Coloring bottle and a colbalt blue Amyl-Kijo bottle amazing.  Anybody know what the Amyl-Kijo might be?  Anyway happy digging and I'll post photos as soon as possible
Jerry

Welcome,
The Baltimore bottle club meets not far from you and is a great place to get info on bottles and meet other collectors.
Be sure to post some here.
Too bad sounds like they destroyed a lot.

Welcome to the forum, Jerry! You have what i would consider to be an extremely enviable job, speaking as a bottle freak! Being a painter I don't get exposed to many excavations.. I'm sure I speak for all of us when I say SHOW US PICS.. and share your finds.. looking forward to hearing more from you! -Charlie

It looks like you found a city dump! I'm sure there are loads of bottles to be found if you dig it out, but we all know construction sites don't have time to wait for us to dig. Try asking a worker to save you some while you are away, and you can pay a little cash. They usually don't care about the bottles anyway. I am interested in knowing if there will be more Baltimore or D.C. bottles (besides the locals). I'm thinking Baltimore because of the bay.

Jerry,  Welcome to the forum. I was a construction inspector for the Government. Unfortunately they hardly ever dug any bottles on the AF Base I worked on.
I have a first cousin named Jerry Gill also. So hey CUZ, get out there on the site, while it is shut down, and dig. After all you are the inspector. Tell them you are doing a density test on the soil for compaction.
Show us some pics and good luck digging.   Marvin Gill

Hello Antiquenut.  This is weird but my name is Jerry Gill and I am from Tennessee.  I grew up in Powell which is just outside Knoxville.  Been living in Maryland for the last 30 years or so.  While I here let me show you a picture of the Annapolis job site.

Hey cyberdigger it's kind of funny it seems I'm the only one on the whole site that gives a hoot about the bottles.  Good for me too bad for them.  The job superintendent did find a large white bottle with really fancy scroll work and a cameo on both sides of the bottle.  He has had it in his office for a couple of months now and today while crossing a large dirt pile I saw a small piece of white glass and when I dug it out it turned out to be the stopper for that very bottle.  What's the chances of that?  Anyway I took to over to him and it fit perfectly.  Also found this little bottle today.  The front has a horshoe around a horses head and on the back it says MADE IN JAPAN.

Hey #1 twin
Let me relate a quick story about digging on Gov. property. Back in the 80's I was the inspector on the diving pool building on the Naval Academy.  So we start digging up old bottles but I don't have the time to go sifting through the dirt.  So on the next day which happened to be a Sunday I returned to the site and talked my way in past the guards explaning I had some samples to pick up.  Which in a way I did.  So I filled up two large burlap bags with bottles when the Academy police came and asked me to leave or else.  So I picked up my "samples" and left quickly.  So I always tell everybody that I got thrown out of the Naval Academy.  I did get some nice bottles.  A lot of them had U S NAVY MEDICAL DEPARTMENT on the bottles in several sizes.  Recently on the Annapolis site I'm on now I have also dug up some of the same bottles.  The site used to have Navy housing on it and before that it was used as a dump.  So believe me I'll go to any lengths to dig I just can't help myself.
Later
Jerry

I'll see if I can find them madman.  But first let me tell you about todays finds.  I thought my good days of finding OLD bottles were over.  All of the utilities are in and I figured no more digging.  Wrong!  Some wonderful Engineer decided to add another manhole and the excavation was about 10' deep and I tell you I'v never been served up so many bottles without digging for hours and hours.  The excavation took about 30 min. and I pulled out so many bottles I couldn't believe it.  This area had all kinds of bottles mostly from the late 1800's.  I took lots of pictures but I'll have to upload them one at a time unless someone out there can tell me how I can upload mutiple images.  For now I'll just show you the best ones and later after I go through the bottles again I'll list the best.  I did remember I found a amber Coca-Cola bottle from Wilmington Del. I'v never run across one before. The first picture is of the excavation, the next one shows the bottles before cleaning at the job site and ther last one shows them after the first cleaning.  Enjoy
Jerry
