Sunday morning, 20 degrees, the great outdoors is calling.
Always wear gloves when probing in freezing weather, it's annoying peeling frozen skin off the probe.

Dave & I decided to try our luck behind this fine abandoned habitat. I dug a decent hole behind this thing several years ago, but always thought there were more pits, just never got back to it.

Dave hit a little brick square in the yard next door right away, while I found a shallow barrel about 5 feet from the hole I dug previously...

Nice clear definition between the natural clean sand and the, uh, well fertilized privy dirt.

Hit the bottom of the barrel, then this bottle about a foot under it, thought it ought to be something really old and cool. Well, it was really old, a plain Kline or Willoby fruit jar, but it wasn't the least bit cool, as the top was gone...

The worthwhile artifacts took up considrably less space. Dave's little bricky ended up being dipped, had the German crock and a pharmacy bottle in the corner.

After we filled in, we walked down the street to survey the digging potential of a large abandoned mansion which shows on my 1875 map. While walking the yard we noticed the vagrants had removed the boards from a window, the better to strip all the scrap metal out of the place, no doubt. We took the oppurtunity to tour the house - neat old place, the downstairs ruined by being cut up into apartments, the whole thing ruined by heavy vandalism and leaky roofing. Had a little attic crawl space with one broken no name TOC med in it, oh well. Also had a 1930's peach can (all the way from Sacramento, Ca.!) and this somewhat crusty Lionel locomotive, which was hidden behind a board, probably why it was left behind. Decided to save digging the pit for another day, too much trash back there...

Locomotive cleaned up well, but I'm told it's a common model, and missing parts, who knows if it works. Still looks good just sitting there.
