I picked up this bottle recently at my local antique store. I don't know anything about it, but I loved it for it's uniqueness, and it's wonderfully intricate stopper. It's about 8" tall. ~Mike

Why did they use this stopper, when they could have just put a cork in it? ~Mike

Hey Mike, the carbonation would blow the cork. The bail helped stop that from happening.

The pressure that built up was quite powerful. I remember as a young child, being driven back from my grandparents' home with bottles of home made ginger beer. The trip was punctuated by loud "Pops!" as the corks shot out with the vibrating of the car (an old Chevrolet!).
