Bought a lot at an auction.  In the bottom of the box was a baggie with these inside.  The top pieces kinda look like bakelite and the largest piece is rumply.  The bottom pieces (which have carvings or some sort of imprint in  them) kinda' remind me of the material that was on knife handles from the 60's....but actually when I first looked at them, I thought they were broken up pieces of chocolate!  Do they look like anything you have ever seen??  Why would someone be saving this stuff?  Thank you!

-Julie

. it could be a bakelite or celluloid utensil handle.

Thanks Charles....that's the word I was looking for (celluloid) when I used Bakelite!  Wonder why someone saved that kind of stuff?

Well, I could not smell anything when I put each piece up to my nose, so....I rubbed each piece between my fingers and then smelled my fingers....and ooooh eeeeeew....the celluloid piece smells like a dead fish, and the other piece just smells like dirt (dusty road).

Hey Julie, hold one of the tiny pieces with and old pair of tweezers and put a lit match to it. If it makes black smoke and turns black and crusty it is Bakelite. If it melts and smells like rotten eggs burning it is cellulose. If it just melts and becomes shiny it is rosin.

Rosin was used by watchmakers and jewelers. It was also used to hold glass pieces together like to piece lamps. Cellulose was used to make glue.

Joe laughed at that!  He is so a packrat.  It's not even funny.  I told him I might need to burn his tool shed rather than sort through all the junk in there someday.  He said "Okay, just take out the bike first."  He has pieces of bottles all over the place too!

Yup!  It WAS him!  Riding a bike....he was covered with dirt and had a bunch of bags of broken glass and stuff hanging from the bike- and him!
