I found 3 of these along the train tracks. They are brown, and they're insulators... that's all I know about them. They have "RACO" written on one place, and "DEAD-END" below it. I know NOTHING about insulators, so any information about these would be appreciated. I'll post some more pictures of them.

Looks to me like this was used to tie two separate lines together, with zero electrical current potential. Let's say a line ran out to the last pole at a dead end, and you wanted to attach it securely to the last pole.. take the line and fold the end over this ceramic piece and tie it back upon itself out the other side, using 12 gauge ties or whatever.. then there's another piece of heavy line wrapped around the pole.. take the end of that and follow the other groove in the insulator, loop line "b" back to the pole, pull taught, and secure.. it's kinda like a pulley without a wheel, sorta.. I think...

So they're not really insulators? Oh well, any value? I remember, 2 of them were secured to cables in a way like you described.

Yeah, they're insulators.  They remind me of the guy strain insulators used to prevent any stray voltage from grounding via the guy wire.

Any idea on the age of these things? I found them along a railroad built in the 1870's, but I doubt they're that old.

i found a couple of them once, cyber's got it right over there, used to tie off a line at the end of a line or at a drop. Age: those normally show up on newer poles from the 40's and they are chocolate brown, so i'd say 40's or 50's.

These dead end tie off are not overly old. Possibly 1940s or 50s? Definately from the last generation of telegraph poles I would say.

Sorry to break your heart man, but in all honestly, they are fairly non valuable.

Thats the sorta stuff I put in my 1 dollar box at shows, and see what happens you never know when someone might want it.
