The bottle pictured, was found while I was geocaching in North Carolina. Since there is a seam along the sides of the bottle, I am assuming "...after 1900..." but I really don't know. That is part of what I am trying to find out. The bottle is 3 3/8" tall by 1 7/8" wide by 1 1/4" deep. The bottom of the bottle has three lines of text. The top line is merely a circle with a vertical line or the number one in it. The next line is the volume of the bottle "2 FL OZ" and the third line is merely the number "5". The top of the bottle appears to be designed for a cork stopper. The glass, itself is approximately 1/8" thick. I am trying to find out what the bottle might have been used for and how to identify it.

I find these all the time and I believe they are some sort of medicine bottle.
Older ones would've had embossed Pharmacy names and the newer ones used paper labels.
Not much value for the unembossed ones and they may date from 1890-1930's depending if they are machine made or not.

If the mold seam on the neck goes over the lip, it is post-1903 (introduction of the automatic bottling machine). If it does not go over the lip, then it is hand finished. That bottle could have held medicine, hair dye, or any other of a number of products. It is a common type of bottle with many uses.

I neglected to mention that the bottle opening is 3/4" internal diameter. The bottle's seam does not go over the lip, so I would guess that it is probably pre-1903 as Mike suggests. I also noticed while checking for the seam going over the lip that there appears to be a seam running around the neck of the bottle about 1/16" below the lip of the bottle. Would this suggest a later or earlier date than 1903?

You said the bottom of the bottle has three lines of text.
What does it say?
I'm tending to believe it was made after 1900.

In my original post I indicated what the text was. Unfortunately I am unable to get a good photo of the bottom of the bottle that shows the text. Again it is as follows:

The top line is a circle with either the number "1" or a line "|" in it.
The second line is "2 FL OZ", presumably the volume of the bottle.
The third line is a single character, the number "5".

I hope this helps as I am very curious as to what the bottle might have been used for.

Hi spfalzer boy I would not want to bust your bubble, I do find what may be the maker of your bottle "Owen Illinoise" they used a I inside a circle since 1954 the number may be the plant where it was made. Owen used quite a few marks.
