As the higher end bottles keep getting higher, there are those skilled crfts people out there that now can make bottle repairs invisible.  The problem of course is peoplebuying these bottles as mint at a premiun price.  Stoneware bottles repairs are very hard to detect and can fool any expert.  I'm sure there are many bottles out there that are sold as mint that have been repaired. On the otherside of the coin though is if the repair is invisible and impossible to see therefore is it not "MINT" and could be classified as such??

Broken is broken, chipped is chipped. There are epioxies available to the average Joe that are made solely for glass restoration. These can be tinted to match any color glass and when properly cured are as hard as the glass it's self. They can be ground and polished into the shape desired and in most cases dulled to match the sheen of the bottle being repaired. If the proper time and care is taken the repair can be made to be virtually invisible to the naked eye. There's a boot at the Brimfield Fair that will do a repair for a fair price. I looked at a few pieces and was quite impressed. I wouldn't hesitate to have it done or give it a try myself.
On the3 ethics issue think about it this way.... How would you like to buy a new car for top dollar only to find out a year later that it fell off the loader while being delivered to the dealer was damaged and your new car's fenders where filled with Bondo and repainted?
I'm pretty sure even the best epoxies can be detected under UV or black light. Might be a good idea to bring one along to your next bottle aucton.

I have seen very good bottle repairs but so far have never seen one that was undetectable.

Hey lobeycat,

Do you know where the bottle repair booth is in Brimfield?  There are so many different shows going on that week that looking for it would be like looking for a needle in a hay stack!

P.S.:  I'll be there in a week

Hey lobeycat,

If your headed west on 20 it will be on you right hand side about midway down near where they sell those awesome shredded pork sangweeches. Sorry I can't pinpoint it better but you know the place is huge almost to the point of overwhelming and it's easy to loose your bearings in those fields. Small booth, always a crowd around it and easy to miss I love Brimfield. Most of the seasoned dealers are sharks and some are hard to haggle with but they can be worn down. Those repair guys also work on porcelain and stoneware.
Lobes.

It's in one of the fields on the right about half way down. About in the middle of said field if I remember correctly. shredded roast pork! dude you have to try one. I eat at least two on the way in and maybe one on the way out.

Brimfield is a good time, Ive only gone up once and got a bunch of great bottles. I was mostly looking for antiques in general however. I did stop at that pulled pork place lobe and they are great! I was thinking about going up for the fall one but Im going to wait for the spring show. Highly recomend anyone going, they have soooo much stuff its almost impossible to see everything, and its like a week long!
