"Cadburys" suggested that this damaged soda we found might be something special due to some errors,...The spelling of "Werbach" and Milwakee....It was suggested we inquire about this bottle....Anyone who might know?                   Thank you,..Joe

I don't think it is a hutch the shape looks a little different. It looks like just a short blob top. What we call those around baltimore are "steamers" because most say steam bottling works. They look very similar to hutches but they arent hutches. I'd have to have a closer look at yours but to me it doesnt look like one,but i could be wrong.

I guess it could be a tooled lightning. (Putnam patented 1878) relative ease of attachment and operation thus he named it lightning stopper.

Hello Joe,  Your bottle is interesting to me also.  It has a good example of mold makers carelessness.  Please let me know if you are selling it.  I would like to at least get my hands on it for examination.  RED Matthews

Hey Joe,
Sorry I didn't reply sooner. I never got a chance to log on yesterday. The bottle you have is indeed mis-spelled. The correct spelling as Roaddog noted is WERRBACH. And as I'm sure you've noted Milwaukee is also mis-spelled with two LLS (MILLWAUKEE). I imagine that when they ordered the bottle, they were worried about the name being mis-printed so, they told them to make sure that they double the third letter. It just turns out that they did it on the wrong word. (This comes entirely from my imagination, though). The bottle is beautiful and its blue. Not too much more you could hope for (except that it was whole and had pontil scars etc . . .)

We call this type of bottle 'transitional'. You can just see the change in Werrbach bottles as the 1880s approached. BEfore they had long slender necks. In the late 70s early 80s, they developed stronger shoulders. By the time hutches were commonly used they had heavy shoulders and much less neck.

About your specific bottle. Because of the errors and the color, it obviously highly collectible. One state expert lists the relative rarity as "VERY RARE" (which means he knows of five or less bottles in existence. I'm not sure if its quite that rare, but it is a good bottle. If I were to appraise a minty example, my guess is that it would be worth about $150 maybe $200 on a great day. With normal wear and tear, I'd say $100-125 -something like that. Werrbach was a big company from a big town and it might have been more valuable if it was from some tiny little brand.

As to your missing bottom. I don't know if it would be worth it to have it repaired. It probably still looks good in a window the way it is. Maybe it could be used a candle holder. You could burn little tea lights inside there? MIght be cool. As far as the value of your bottle without the bottom, I would guess that someone who really wanted one and was willing to hold onto it until a better one came along - it might be a few bucks.

Great bottle! Sorry it was broken.

Just Dig It was spot on with how to list it!

But man, it really does look like it is in great condition, low wear, nice and clean, no haze or stain - except for that little base bruise.

I will pull a few Werrbachs out and take some pics of what I was talking about.

By the way, your bottle was made by A & DHC if you lost the moldmarkings. It contained soda or 'mineral' water.

The more that I look at the pictures the sadder I get. It looks like there may have been a swirl of slag glass up in the shoulder and neck. (The open bottom picture shows what I'm talking about). What a shame.

And I just noticed in that open bottom picture that you do have your A & DHC markings.

Thanks everyone for your interesting info and response's.....It's just one of those bottles that makes me wonder...Was it whole before the gas co. dug there?, etc....Where it was found we couldn't really dig there, but now I watch if the city is digging, or if that building ever needs to come down... It's an old and productive area of Bradford where we spotted it. We had it stashed away in a box w/ some other "would have been" shards , so at least this way everyone got to check it out and I'd have never known of the errors either...Thanks everyone!                                                 Joe

Mr. Fred came over this morning for coffee and some bottle talk,... and we were examining the Werback bottle, and happened to be looking at a dark aqua, similar "W.T. co" bottle that Penn Digger gave to Lauren and I a couple weeks ago...anyhow It became apparent that they were made at the same place???? Check it out.

Wowie, that was fun. I had to look through my bottle boxes three times to find one of these. I try to organize them but I had mis-boxed one and not until I searched bottle by bottle could I find it. However, this shows what I was talking about. All are Werrbachs. The oldest at left, the newest at right.

At Left is an early mineral water dating late 60s or early 70s. Note the long neck, no shoulders.

Next comes the A&DHC bottle Joe found. This is late 70s. Already you can see less neck and stronger shoulders.

The missing link. This early hutch (early 80s) still retains a bit of the mineral water look to it. The shoulders are sloping a bit but the blob is smaller.

Finally, at right,is a TOC hutch with strong shoulders and little neck.

Hey Bob...thanks for posting those....Interesting. Are my eyes playing tricks or does your (second from left bottle) blue one share the same embossing error?                                                   Joe
