No, they're described as rows of bumps so you can find it in the dark before electricity. I asked for a clearer picture or a better desciption but they said all they have is a webcam,  they wouldn't describe it any better. I think they're F of S. Other bottles look the same way in the pictures. I think it's trickery. I'm really tempted to buy it just to female dog like crazy and demand my money back.

I'm skeptical. I have seen some medicines with worn out or damaged molds that have almost braille looking bumps on them. If its not an applied lip Ayers I wouldnt even bother.

I still had the picture. I'd have to look for the bottle again.

Looks like one of the later Ayers. Hard to tell much from that photo.
Hobnails or other tactile indications were normally on things like poisons that you didnt want to drink. Not sure why they would purposely put them on a medicine?

I've never seen an Ayers with hobnails, and that looks like a regular old Ayers to me.  I collect Ayers bottles...  that photo looks like it's from the stealhers... they often have no clue what there talking about, and try to sell Mexican glass as authentic early American pieces all the time.  They do sell good bottles now and then, but I would be very wary of buying off of them Cow...

Just wondering , does pre-electricity infer that peoples' house were dark at night?
You can actually light a house pretty darn well with oil lamps.
For our annual halloween party we use only oil lamps for lighting and it seems to work pretty well.

I was reading a while back about a mishap related in an old remedies book.  The story goes that mother always kept castoria and made the kids take a spoon everyday.  Fathers favorite bottle was a hair balm or dap or something like that.  Anyway the family kept all their bottled products in the same cupboard.  One night the kids were playing a game in living room and the father had to go out for a church meeting or something.  The story says that father didn't want to take the light away from the kids so he went to the cupboard in the pantry with no light to retrieve his hair balm and the family heard a shriek!  The ran into the pantry to find their father had dumped castoria all over his head in the dark!  It took weeks to get it all out...

the story insinuates that whether using candles or lamps there were not many available for use, they conserved a great deal with what they had, or it was a lot of trouble to light a candle or lamp?

I would suppose that if you were off quick to the cupboard it took more time to find and ignite a light then it did to go to the cupboard and back, and often it was passed upon... I guess?

Besides the electricity issue, a lot of people back then couldn't read.

You should defininately buy that "star pontil"
But seriously folks, I'm betting the raised dots are vent hole marks from a worn mold. That's my guess until I see a better photo.

I'm thinking that the window they use for backlight of the webcam 320X240 pixel camera has a screen and it's adding a LITTLE extra detail. Then the describe the picture and not the bottles. That's why there are so many poison type bumpy meds from the 1890's + for sale. I still think it would be fun to buy one and demand my money back, leave negative FB and be an outright A-holey guy about the whole thing.

But I'm not.

guess I missed a t there...  When they came out they started with a lot of really good stuff and it made it look like they knew what they were doing.  They were getting good money for everything.  Then the Mexican bottles trickled in and now it looks like they are just pissin in the wind...  I've noticed now the they do not get many bids on anything...

Thats why e-bay is much fun right?  Anyone can sell anything, regardless of if they know what they are selling!

I've been trying to figure out these people for a while... if they are just trying to rip people off or have no clue?

thought you were making serious discussion here Matt... lol  I just read their folly's listing where they say "before electricity was invented"!  Who was it who invented electricity?  Wasn't that god?

As far as I understand it electricity was discovered as opposed to invented.
As far as god goes I'm not sure whether he/she/it was discovered or invented but I'll leave that discussion up to the religion forum.

Do you collect all the different mold numbers and variations (there seem to be a lot) or just the basic variants (ie Sarsaparilla , Pectoral, ect...) ?
