I went to the Ottawa river today, arrived around 9:30, came home about 5. I did go in where I had planned around 3 miles outside of Lima. I waded a little but I was not comfortable with the smell and feel of the water. It had a gray contaminated look, though the bottom was gravel and rock it had a slimy feel. The water even had the feel of slime as the current eddied about my legs. It almost felt as if a velvet glove was constantly wrapping around my legs. I did brave it for a bit then decided better of it, did not see a fish, a crawdad, not even a carp. If you do not see carp things are not good, But I did see a blue heron and a frog. I did not get a close enough look to see if it had 3 eyes. I did find a hard plastic toy, Auburn telephone truck, a few old shards, I will go back but with chest waders this time. After I exited I went to another place in the same river, but it is maybe 5 miles downstream. It was like night and day as far as clarity and ecosystem. On the 3rd cast out I caught a smallmouth bass, plenty of crawdads about, even carp. While walking up thru some fast water I did find the Lima Consolidated Bottling soda pictured. I waded and fished quite a ways before finding more shards. The crock and pottery shards became more numerous, I followed the trail up to a sand spit. It was littered with various glass shards, I followed that upstream to find a bank dump. It was mainly modern trash, baby food jars, modern glass, beers and such. I think that the older stuff is in the river due to the fact the current comes in strong to this bank. I would say it hits the bank from the right at about a 60degree angle. I would guess the largest part of this bank washed out long ago. There are a few deep holes I will try to get into at another time. On the way back down I did find the Hand Med Co. Philly. So that was my long winded excitement for the day, Have a great one people.

If I fish to eat I catch em in farm ponds. Not sure if this Ottawa runs that far north. will have to check that out. I think it may run into the Blanchard or Auglaize.

Thanks for the story and the post. Sounds like a place you could snorkel and find some stuff. Snorkeling was the bridge to me finally starting up scuba diving for bottles. I wouldn't worry much about toxic stuff unless the river is stagnant and there isn't much of a current. But thats just me, I tend to throw caution to the wind in most cases.
Good luck finding more things there
