Hello eugysworld,

Welcome to the blue pages, and thanks for bringing this bottle by.

Could you take some larger photos, please, perhaps in natural light? What does the base look like? Remember to check the embed button so your photos show up on the page.

I will post pictures of the base soon, it has no markings. The only marking is shown on picture. Any idea what the year looks like? I found it in a privy with all bottles dating from 1840- 1890

It would be at the upper end of that scale, I believe.

I was going to guess Bay City Brewing Company, from Michigan, until I saw the bottle.
I have seen many of their bottles, but not one like that. Every one I have seen was in block font, not a monogram.
What state are you in, that will help us track it down.
Bill

Its Bartholomay Brewing Company. Of Rochester, Ny They had a branch here in Baltimore and some of their bottles turn up here along with those that are marked Baltimore Branch.

Thanks Chris,

I appreciate the solution to the mystery monogram. Thanks.

There's a good history of Bartholomay, starting almost half way doen THIS PAGE, complete with lithogaph of 3 labelled bottles and some nice photos and lithos of the brewery.

Hello there eugysworld, your bottle is actually from the Baltimore Brewing Company, and dates somewhere between 1889 and 1899, my guess would be to roughly the 1890-1894 timeframe. These were once assumed to have possibly been a product of the Bartholomay Brewery, but that has been proved false when a single labeled example turned up confirming it was from the Baltimore Brewing Company.

These bottles are interesting in that some do exist with the slug plate having been inserted upside down in error. With the BBCO monogram being almost symetrical, the upside down slug plate does not stand out easily to the naked eye as being upside down. I will take some photos of this next time I rummage through the boxes in my basement, and post them here if interested.

Nice bottle, not very common, and being desirable in that it is one of the few pre-prohibition beer bottles from Baltimore blown in the large quart size.

Here is a link to photos of the labeled example, the upside down slug plate examples, and several other bottles from the Baltimore Brewing Company, as sourced from Tod's awesome website.

I did not know a labeled example had turned up, that is great. Now we know for sure who the bottle was used by.

I think the neat thing about the upside down plate is that it was done in two different runs of bottles. Usually the realized the mistake pretty quick and there are only a few bottles.

we used to dig alot of these with a funny loop seal at Frederick Dump.

it must have been hard for the person to determine which way to insert the plate in that mold
