I like early blown glass and try to incorporate it into my bottle
and flask collection. This is a circa 1750/60 English Jelly Glass
I bought at the show. I have European bottles along with my
American bottles and I enjoy blown glass from all areas.

I hope this helps, Its tough to see the pontel, but its rough and
you can see a controlled bubble through it that is in the stem.

Thank you for the extra pictures ! In picture 2 the base wear shows up well ,good to know what that is supposed to look like .The controlled bubble shows up well too .One uneducated question, is it called an English jelly glass because it held jelly ,or is that the style or type of glass ?

From everything I have read, they where called Jelly Glass
but where used for any basic desert.

Hello Greg,

That is a wonderfully elegant piece. Thanks for showing it. Is that your catalog number on the base, or is it from the previous owner? Beautiful early glass!

That is a reference number from a past owner. I'm sure
it will come off with acetone or nail polish remover.
I just left it there. Thanks for the compliment.

I used the term Jelly Glass referring to this type of glass
being very popular in the 18th century. You had Jelly Glass
and Sweetmeat Glass. From all the reference material I have
read and illustrations I have looked at,  pretty much confirmed
it being a Jelly Glass. There are Sweetmeat Glasses that are
very similar in form but for the most part have a wider/broader
bowl. The stem is typically shorter on the Jelly Glass and attached directly to a bulb for a base. This practice helped
prevent breakage when hot liquid was poured into the bowl.
The Sweetmeat Glass typically has a longer Baluster Stem and
often cut with a Silesian/Fluted design.

Hi Potstone and a special thanks for showing us these pictures.  I have read about these English and European glass wares, I just never had the chance to own or handle and examine.  Neat to own and that is for sure.  RED Matthews
