Barbers bottle? Loetz vase? - 11/13/2003 2:41:23 AM

I am posting this for someone who does not have access to a computer. They wrote as follows:

quote:

Here is my question: I have this (bottle, vase?) that I was told, Could Be a barbers bottle. It doesn't look like any barbers bottle that I have ever seen but .. I am no expert.

The bottle appears to have been blown from the top and has a sheared lip. It has no pontil mark that I can see.

In my pictures (below) the bottle looks like it is a solid color but it
isn't. The base color of the glass is an iridescent gold in color and if you hold it up, you can see through it!

From the pictures, you can see the other colors that run throughout the
glass. Depending on what angle you view it from, the bottle changes colors!

It has purples, golds, aquas, turquoise and other colors that change according to the angle. In your opinion, could this be a barbers bottle? I have even been told that it looks like a loetz vase!?

Any help gratefully received - thank you.

i really doubt that this is a barber bottle. the glass looks to heavy. this is a vase . it looks like a ground and polished pontil on the bottom. this piece might be signed. look very close at the bottom .

Yes, I subscribe to the same feeling that it is a vase, also.
Too ornate to be a barber bottle.

H i Roger this looks like Purple Slag (Marble Glass)
1870-1880 in Tarantum Penn and by other makers (Numerous reproductions)
In England would show brithish Registry marks. Worth around $45.00 more or less unless in blue green or orange also by Greentown Glass (Chocalate and pink slag)

It is a vase, and does look very much in the style of Loetz. With a sheared top, it is possible that the neck was longer at one point in time and possibly flared. Damage may have caused someone to lower the neck. This is just a guess. The irredescence is striking in the photo. I would suggest getting someone in art glass to look at it. With all the reproductions, it is difficult to tell from photos. Good luck.
