Hi all,

I was out in a shop up in central Missouri a little while back and found this really crude and hammer whittled flask. I could see the whittle from 10 feet away! I was really hoping it wasn't damaged and seen it was excellent with no problems. Then I turned the price tag over and it said $15. So then it found a new home!

I love those flasks! What's funny is, I haven't seen one like that that wasn't really whittled and crude... Lucky, I suppose...

Hey Tim,

Nice photos, sir. You really captured the crudity on that on that cold mould ripple. Looks almost organic... I can almost feel the texture. Is it my color settings, or is there a fair amount of green in that?

Which glass house may have made this?  I have recently seen similar flasks on the bay listed as Stoddard???

Thanks guys!

It seems to be a golden amber in the top portion Surface, then goes to a kind of apricot color closer to the base. The pics turned out nice, but it seems even more whittled in person!

PD - I'm not sure, i've seen them listed Stoddard too.

Just curious... What exactly is hammer whittling in glass production terms? Never heard this before.

KBbottles,
When the bottle is still warm and soft they hammer it with a small ball peened hammer.

From what one member pointed out to me... The "whittling" effect is actually from the glass being blown into a mold that is still cold and not at working temperature.  For example it could have been the first bottle made of the day in the morning during the cold months of the year.  Who knows... It is speculated that physically hammering the glass never occurred.  Not trying to argue or be a "smarta$$" on the forum as one member was quick to shoot a private email to me about early this morning.  Simply asked for clarification on the subject as I intend to be properly educated on the methods of bottle and glass production and think it is important for the collecting community as a whole to understand this as well.

That is all,

-KB

Blade's comment was made with tongue firmly planted in cheek.  "Whittle" is in itself a misnomer/urban myth of sorts that sprang from the erroneous notion that bottles were blown in hand whittled wooden molds.  The effect is in fact a reaction between the glass gather and the interior of the iron mold.

it seems that, particularly in the older glass, that the " whittling " effect is too common to be caused by " cold " moulds used at the beginning of shifts. could it be that the mould was dipped in water occasionally ? who knows ??

Well I am really confused by all this business of whittle in the glass thickness.  When the hot glass formed parison was blown in the final mold the thickness of the glass was altered to match the hardening of the blown out parison.  If the metal was too cold the glass would set up thicker in that area and blow thin in between.  Early book writers started calling it whittle, unfortunately.  Early bottle makers in some of the South Jersey glass houses actually filled the closed mold with the molten glass, just to heat up the iron.  These solid bottles and jars were actually thrown away in the early glass house dumps, because they could not place them back in the molten glass crucible - and they had no way to break them up for reuse of the glass.
I have covered this subject in a homepage subject, where I explained the way this rough light transmission got into the glass.  RED Matthews

To continue this before I get timed out.  I asked a question many years ago in a Thatcher Glass Meeting that nearly got me fired,  and it took me 50 years to find the answer to my question.  I found it described in a book by Rhea Mansfield Knittle.  The where, why and when of the fact that they started chilling the iron of a glass mold cavity to produce the dendritic carbon pattern in the iron next to the glass cavity of the mold.  I don't know what else to put out to bottle collectors to resolve this confused subject.
This subject Flask is a beautiful example that any collector would like to own - even me.  Though I have many bottles with cold mold ripple in the glass.
