Hey Folks!!

Just wanted to post a few pictures of some odd little bottles my Dad picked up a while back. I am rushing around getting ready for work but wanted to put these on before I head out the door. Have not been out in the dirt since the new job and have not participated much on the forum lately. Just had an itch to post something up. These were found in an attic in Philly. One with no label was cleaned to give an idea of the color and style of the bottles. These look to be early bottles. Dip Mold I guess?? Any info on these would be great. Year? Bottle Type? Info on Carpenter?  The bottles are Carpenters compound of Sarsaparilla , Cubebs and Copavia. warehouse no 301 Market St. Philadelphia. The one is loaded with bubbles and appears to be hand signed by Wm Carpenter?? Can these labels be cleaned up at all? Should the bottles be left alone or cleaned out?

Labeled and pontiled? Those are some nice finds there. I've got a few labeled with contents bottles but nothing nearly this old.

Notice how all 3 necks are different size? These are extreemly crude.Panels are sunk in  spots. I wish the camera showed the crudeness more. Actually I think the camera probably would, but the photographer(me) lacks in the camera skills department!

THose are probably some of the earliest bottles from the famous George W Carpenter.
He was a well known druggist and scientist in philly. I think he started selling in the late 1820s. I would guess those bottles are from the very early 1830s. Never nice examples of early Philada meds.

here is some info from 1834 ...

Thanks guys for the comments. I probably should have posted this in another section now that I look at it. But I always come to the digging section. Thats just where I always have a look.

Gunth,

Thank You for the info on Carpenter. I was hoping you might have a little something on him. It does appear that these are some of his earliest bottles. The labels are  pretty dirty as to be expected on a old bottle. But would you leave them be or try to clean these or the bottles at all? I know these are not embossed but when were the first bottles embossed? I have seen very early seal bottles but was just wondering when the embossing fist started.

  Joe,

I will try and stop in more often and say a few things. Great people here and I do stop in often and look at the digs, I just feel like I should be out digging too. Need to get off second shift. Messes everything up!! Dad does love to find the old stuff. I found these on one of his bottle shelves and snagged them up and brought them home for a photo shoot!! I snagged some other goodies too that I will post up later on.

Pretty great little bottles,...very early and with some interesting history....The signature is very cool too, I suppose it could be his actual signature, that early on....Thanks for sharing them Kevin, and yes,...second shift was very difficult for me to manage too....It takes a rare soul to stay in synch with that. Take care.

Turlington bottles were embossed in the 18th century so medicines were embossed much earlier that those bottles. It was fairly expensive to make custom embossed bottles so I think many medicine men started out with label-only bottles. Once thier "patent" was worth protecting then they embossed bottles to help prevent copycats.
If you are planning on selling the bottles I would not recommend cleaning them at all.
