Hello All, first post.

I'm part of a group restoring a narrow gauge railway buffet car and this thing was in it when found and brought back to the railway 20-odd years ago. We think it would have been used for keeping food cool but have no way of knowing for sure. Anyone seen anything like it before?

Additionally we're guessing that the two small holes in the lid were for a handle but have no idea what it might have been like. Could it just have been a piece of thick rope knotted under the lid?

Finally, as is obvious from the pictures the lid is broken. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be the best way to glue this thing so that we can put it back to use in the finished carriage?

Apologies if this is in the wrong place, but I arrived here by the power of Google :) I'm struggling with this, so all suggestions will be gratefully received!

Regards, Jaz

Neat find. It is a dry ice box. It was used to cool and carbonate sodas and water. It likely had a wood and metal handle. We have several collectors on the forum who repair stoneware and ceramic item and I suspect some of them will be along soon.

Just in case you are wondering where I got my info, My great uncle Carlos worked for the RR for 50 years. He had three of those. One stoneware one and two newer galvanized ones with ceramic tops. He had alot of neat RR stuff.

I never thought of it but they do kind of look like batteries.

Hey Warren, not sure they did this but the way it looks you could put a little water in the rim and then it would be airtight.

It's possible, but it would seem unlikely. There would have been no electrics on the coach when in service, and when it was used as a summer house prior to restoration it had mains electricity to power the lights etc.

The coach saw service as a buffet car in the 1920s - is there any chance it could be from that time period?
