I was wondering if anyone has tried ceramic pellets in their tumbler, rather than using cut copper or glass beads? I have a friend who owns a rock and gem shop, and he has a large supply of ceramic pellets about the size of #12 cut copper, he thinks if I polish the ceramic so there are no sharp edges to scratch the glass it would work as well as copper at a much lower price. Any one out there tried this before?

It “should” work as long as the ceramic is softer than the glass otherwise it will scratch the bottle. Ceramic beads might wear down pretty fast though so I would just get a little bit from him and try it on a crappy bottle first incase it damages it.

interesting experiment but my guess would be the ceramic material will end up being a cutter.
The density is also probably a bit low for an effective tumbling medium.

I've got a snuff jar in right now, cutting with the ceramic pellets was very fast! I will let you know how it looks after polishing.

Very curious what your results are.
We all learn from any outcome you have had...good or bad!

Works well for cutting, nice even frosting and no scratches after about 1 & 1/2 days with 600RA. DID NOT WORK FOR POLISHING! Even with polish the ceramic continues to cut, and frosted a bottle which just needed a light polish, luckily it was just an amber American Soda Fountain bottle I've been using for practice! The snuff jar has a nice frost, but wouldn't polish with the ceramic and is now tumbling in glass beads. Looks like I'm going to have to break down and use the copper. Uhg, I've got a barrel ful of scrap wire, but it all has to be stripped before I can cut it down to size...........

I found a nice unembossed Western blown light amber snuff out at Sunset in SF in 1988/9 which had small white dots like splattered paint on the surface. Turned out to be something that washed off with water and a plastic scrub brush. Porcelain cuts glass because it is a heavier material than glass. I guess altered/restored glass bottles are like restored paintings or comic books in their collectible value and desirability.

Interesting experiment anyway... never know until you try it

Thanks for the update Don!
Along the same vein (of what doesn't work to polish) I've had no luck polishing in glass beads with 1500 SiC, while Al works great.
