We found this brown glass bottle in an old ranch homestead dump. Marked "Certo" on one side and "For 1/2 Bottle Pour To Here" one the other side (print is upside down) 7 1/2 inches tall. I am thinking it's either veterinary or medical...?? Thanks! Dawn

Hello and Welcome,

Here is an exerpt from Digger's web site:

Hello, I was trying to identify a bottle I found while digging in my front yard. I was hoping that you might be able to help identify it. The bottle is brown/amber in color, stands about 7.5 inches tall and has about a 2.25 inch diameter. The top looks like it is supposed to take a bottle cap. I think that it hold a volume of one cup. It has a line horizontally about half way up the bottle that extends from seem line to seem line. Above this line is the words "1/2-CUP" with an arrow pointing to the line. Below this line is the words "1/2-CUP" with an arrow pointing to this line. It is an interesting bottle and would like to learn more about it such as what it was used for, when it was made and value (if any). Thanks in advance for your time, Bruce

It sounds like a Certo bottle. Certo was a product for making jelly and jam. The brown Certo bottle has the "For 1/2 bottle pour to here" mark embossed on the backside -- measures about 7 1/4" tall and 2 1/4" in diameter which sounds an awful lot like your bottle. They are very common and sell for $1-2. Digger

Hi:
Your description sounds like two bottles I found in Virginia, but mine are green.

I believe Certo is a product used to make jellies and jams. It is Pectin I think. Makes them jell or get thick

Right, Certo is liquid pectin, used to thicken home-made jams and jellies. I remember my mother using it. It is still sold, and last time I looked, the current containers are still similar to what you described.
