Are there any cheaper alternatives than the JarDoctor at $8.50 per pound?
I imagine even shipping 20 pounds will cost quite a bit.

you can save shipping if you pick it up at a bottle show.

You can try a reclamation yard that buys and sells copper wiring by the weight. They usually have in different size gauges (say 10 t0 18).
Also if you know of an electrician, they always have cut off scraps that they throw away. I have access to both, so my copper costs are very low.

If you mean how do I cut the stripped copper into small tumbling size pieces. I bought a very good hand copper and take the copper strand and make a series of indentations into the strand. When I have finished a strand, I just crumble the strand by hand into a container.
The larger gauge copper, I just cut the strand into small pieces into a bowl.
It takes time and I am sure someone on the forum has an easier and faster method for cutting the copper.
The copper I buy at the reclamation center comes stripped of its plastic coating and is ready to cut. The copper wire I get for free from the electricians, I use an electrical wire stripper to split the plastic coatings off.
I do a little about each day and it simply adds up over time. This way I have fresh copper just about all the time. I never mixed my new copper with my old copper.
I hope this helps.

I remember someone built a rig for their drill press to cut copper.  Using a large bit and some guides seems to work for them. It's somewhere in the forum...just havnt found it yet.

What might the metal cylinder be that gets drilled? Perhaps some type of spacer?

It can be anything, you can make it out of wood, it's just something with a hole large enough to feed the copper wire into so it can be cut by the fluted edge of the drill bit....Jim
