Bottom half of bottle found in Porstmouth NH. Embossed words Christian and Bottling are obvious. Shore and Works are highly likely. Clear glass with light purple tint. Appears to be 3 part mold with air pockets in glass. No marks on bottom. Search online, Atheneum and Public Library revealed only 2 clues. Christian Shore Bottling Works paid business tax in 1911. Also, photo dated 1894 shows 3 cases clearly labelled CSBW. Assume may have been associated with Frank Jones Brewery, perhaps soda company owned by Frank Jones.

Is there some way to trace the logo and records of registration? I have had not luck with that.

Your suggestions will be appreciated.

Chris

The photo below can be seen in extremely high detail on the website listed above. Two crates in the photo dated 1894 are labelled Christian Shore Bottling Co Portsmouth NH.

Hey Greenleaf,
Welcome. I love the picture with the barrels in it! Way cool. I do not know anything specific about your exact bottler but my guess is that you found an embossed crown bottle that likely dates into the 1920s or 30s. You may find some clues as to the glass mold maker on the bottom or the hub (like A.B.Co. or the like).

BBB - there are no marks on the bottom of the bottle other than shape and texture. There is a distinct mold line on the side and near the bottom that looks like what I would expect a mechanical 3 part mold to leave. chris

Greenleaf...welcome to the Forum.
Your bottle is pre-1916 at least due to its amethyst tint...
May possibly be a beer. I found this post by Googling...>

CHRISTIAN SHORE BOTTLING WORKS, PORTSMOUTH, NH I found a pinksh bottle with this name on it and the word Registerd. I think it may be connected to the Frank Jones Brewerey that was once early to middle 1800 in Portsmouth, Nh Any information on this bottling works or the bottle would be great. thank you

Not much help, but it's a clue. The barrels with the crates may also indicate a brewery . Also those type of crates were in use from about 1890 -1910 (maybe later). Usually, the bottles (often Hutchinson types), were inserted upside down thru holes in a false bottom...and kept from hitting together at their bases by wood dowels/slats or metal rods.

Outstanding picture...

BBB and WM, thanks for the responses.

Does anyone understand the meaning of "Registered". I am looking for a public record of the registration. I found some records at the Federal Government level but nothing on CSBW, yet.

Is registered a federal or state function? I am more interested in the history of CSBW and expect that is the only way I will come to understand the glass.

Chris

Christian Shore wasn't a person but an area of NH.....

Passing a variety of places of historic interest, we find ourselves on Christian-shore, or as now called, North Portsmouth. We cannot learn why it ever received the name of Christian-shore. Previous to the building of the mill-bridge in 1764, there were only three or four houses on that side of the river. There was the Jackson house on the point, the Ham house on Freeman's point, one or two near where the hay scales now are, and the large Dennett house, sometimes called "the beehive," on an elevation west of the old school house. The latter mansion is more than one hundred and forty years old. Of its early days, when the boys from Christian-shore passed round the head of the creek to attend school on the South road,--and of the troubles which arose when the boat was not at hand to pass the river in the evening,--and of the hundred other little incidents which might be brought up, we will say nothing, although tradition is full. We will give only one sketch relating to the "beehive" or Dennett mansion

Hi Chris I think it means the bottle and it's embossing or labeling is trademarked.....Jim

I know that building well. It has been purchased by Petersen Engineering, stripped, rehabbed and is being renovated to an advanced low energy, super-insulated standard. They should be putting the new siding on any day now.

On Sunday, I discovered that Ward's Distillery was located at 24 Dennett Street and one block west of "The Inn at Christian Shore".....within chunking distance of where I found the bottle.

I found an add for Ward's Distillery in the 1905 NH Business Register and will post that ASAP.

Small clues continue to appear.

Thnks for the response.

That is one of the biggest mystery bottles from portsmouth next to the Nye Chemical works. I had a blob and a crown top. the blob was dug in the big dump behind the gym. Christian shore was the Irish section of town, but i have found no advertising for the botteling works. Some time scrolling thru microfilm might yield something. I'm not sure on any relationship between the bottling works and Jones, but maplewood cuts right thru Christian shore and lead directly to the Jones estate! One thing for sure is that it wasn't in business very long. Not to change the post but does anyone have any idea what Andrew Preston marketed under Nye Chemical Works? I have yet to find any Nye's in portsmouth

mainedigger....I stumbled across some digging behind the gym off Woodbury Ave.....is that your "worK"? I was wondering if anything interesting came out of those holes.

I showed the bottle to several experts at www.nhglassmakers.com last weekend. None of them had anything specifc to offer.

I will spend some time at the Atheneum after the New Year and I'll keep an eye open for "Nye" while I am searching.
