Finally gave up and this is what I've got so far...not bad looking, so far.....was wondering if hitting this up with a small sand blaster would destroy it?
Also measures 7 and a half inches....

Thanks Paul...we thought that was what it was last night but I thought that sounded kinda silly!!  Any Ideas on how well this stuff would handle being sand blasted...I have one I can use here at work...but I don't want to ruin these!!!  If any one has any ideas PLEASE share!!!
Amanda

sand blastin will take it down to bare metal...i did it to a  3 quart dutch oven that was left behind after eldery lady moved from her house.  she had used it as a cactus planter, ..ended up with a lot of pittin inside and out . i seasoned it and just donated to a local boy scout troop .   but in your buggy parts i don't think that will be neccessary.

Those cleaned up well Amanda! I am no expert, but I would not hit them w a sand blaster. Looks like your "elbow grease" has done a great job.
So if your digging partner enjoys going w/ you, that sounds like time well spent together. It is hard work at times, thought it is not just about finding that rare old item.

Thanks Gramps :) We do have a lot of fun...were a strange little crew I guess....and I really enjoy just exploring and seeing what there is out there!!
I have found these 2 old foundations, both within 2 miles from where I grew up....the one we really haven't checked out yet has an old privy or cistern of some sort....I can only imagine if I would have found that as a child!! We were bad enough running thru swamps and such but my mom would have killed me if she ever found us playing in a privy.....I just bring that up because I was telling her about it earlier and she got all grossed out....I was like...come on if it is a old privy there shouldn't be any new poo in there!!
I can't wait to get back out to our new spot and see what else it has to bring...it really makes you wonder when you find a place like that, where things just fell down, caved in and were just left behind.
I know many farms in this area along with my families went under in the 50's....it's saddening to see them now and wonder what they looked like all those years ago... I sat with my dad the other day looking at pics of the old family dairy farm and it brought tears to my dads eyes looking back at the way things used to be...compared to now the farm has been bought and looks like a dump zone for rednecks..(no offense to rednecks!!)
Well enough of my chatterbox stories....thanks for your input. I decide I wouldn't sand blast anything I've found and the buggy pedal looks really nice next to my fireplace anyway!

Amanda

I would have to say no on the sand blaster, but in the little experience I have with cleaning anything that is rusted and pitted (dad is an antique tool collector and cleans old tools all the time) I use a wire brush attached to a motor. I am sure some of you know the set up I am speaking of, usually has a wire brush on one side and a whitrock or polishing brush on the other with a pulley between them with a belt that runs over it and down to the motor which turns them at a pretty high speed. This brush as well as conducting electrolysis on these items (if you have the set up and know how for that) would be the easiest and most efficient way to clean these. As for the little nooks and crannys in the metal, if you have a "Dremel" or some generic brand of it you can get a wire brush attachment for that and use it. Hope this helps,   Falcon "The Bottleman" Belew.

Thanks Bottleman!  I do have access to all of that where I work....Just now need to find the time to do it!!  I was told no wire brushes by some one else so I've just soaked them in WD40 and scrubbed them with a scrubby pad and a brush...

That person may have more experience in the field than I so go with whatever you think. As for the electrolysis, if you dont have the set up for it google it, its easy to make with stuff from around the house. For those of you who dont know what electrolysis is it is the reverse of metal plating. In metal plating electric currents plate objects with gold silver platinum etc. In electrolysis the electric currents pull in the opposite direction and pull the excess metal (rust) off and into the water.
