Never had much luck with the cleaning of acl's, when I dig them up they seem to be in good shape and figure that with a little wash they would be mint, but that never seems to be the case, it always seems that when it's washed or being washed the label always fades or breaks down to sum degree. Could someone give me the basics on cleaning acl's. Thanks

Just to update the posts a little since it did not get any respondance, got a e-mail from a member suggesting to let the bottles climatize for 2 weeks before cleaning with water seems to help.

1st Acl's and painted labels are two different things. Acl's will withstand being in the ground to a degree. Painted labels on the other hand usually will not. Painted labels when removed from the ground will begin to flake or when they are rubbed the label will rub off. Acl's will more or less harden if let dry and then can be cleaned fairly easy with a soft tooth brush and Bar Keepers Friend which can be purchased at most Dollar Stores. The trick in most cases is dry time let the label dry before you touch it or attempt to clean it. If it's painted label it just plain and simple usually will not hold up. I have read all of the ideas but I have dug lots of both over the past 30 years and have found that the Painted labels just as a rule don't hold up. There are a few that will (this is because of soil type etc not the label) but most will not. I have tried wrapping them in something as soon as dug this is no good because as they dry they still begin to break down . I always thought it was strange how good they looked when they came out of the ground only a few hours later to be a slick after everything falls off. I even had one man suggest to spray them with cooking oil as his idea was it would put natural oil back into the painted label (that didn't work either) . Again from my experience to be realistic acl labels hold up 75% of the time while painted labels hold up less than 25%. Bar Keepers friend and a soft tooth brush will do wonders for a weathered stained label. Good luck .

McDirts correct about the painted labels.  Dug a Red Rock Cola recently that appeared mint when i pulled it out.  When I went to leave, the label was already flaking off, so I left it there.  I've never found a cure for painted labels.
