Friend has given me a pre-1900 bottle Blown in Mold which he found along the banks of the bayou after it was dredged. The interior of the clear glass has staining colored from cream to tan to dark brown. Do you recommend acid wash of some kind? Please give details of the process.

try soaking the bottle in some different house hold cleaning solutions first, and scrub with a bottle brush. some bottles will not clean well because the glass is sick. i dont clean bottles unless they are worthy of my time to clean them. most content stain can be soaked out. dont use real hot it could crack your bottle.

Hydrochloric acid diluted with 4 parts water will soak out allmost anything without hurting the bottle (will hurt your hands over time though, use gloves).
Get a big tub and soak your bottles in it for a few days then scrub with a stiff brush and clean water, also a handfull of fine gravel will help on the inside shake it around with a little bit of water.

Irish, I use copper B-Bs to help clean the inside of bottles same idea as the gravel. Use plenty of water or ammonia to cushin them when shaking. Olddump

Hi all, I was just perusing some of the past conversations and have to relate something that happened to me regarding cleaning. I just picked the hobby up again a couple of years ago and I found a terrific surface dump out behind a local golf course. One of the first bottles I found was a Warners Nervine Cure. It had some haziness inside so I took some pieces of 12g copper cable I cut for the purpose and HOT water and proceeded to clean the insides. It really came out sparkling, but them as I held it up to the light, there it was...a crack on the inside surface that wasn't there when I started! This happened in late April, while we still had some frost in the ground and I suspect that I should have allowed the bottle to adjust to room temp and use tepid not hot water. Although it's worthless now, I've kept that bottle on display because the crack doesn't show unless you look for it and to remind me not to be that @%*&!! careless again!

Hey..Mainedigger...

I was scrounging around in an old delapidated(sp) barn in Harney County a few years back and there on a shelf high above my head was a BIG square glass jar...turned out to be an old (how old I don't know) glass "Exide" battery..no top, open, about 6"x7 1/2"x10 1/2" high, embossed with "Exide..Iron-clad" and shows water line...what a find...until I got it down off shelf..someone had chucked a rock though the only knothole in the board it was leaning against and put a big "bulls eye" crack in the front of it...no prob...right? Still intact...took it home just for the display of it and decided to clean the bird droppings and years of dust out of it..prob! Filled it with HOT water and the whole side popped off! Stupid stupid me!!! I did super glue it back together and it sits on top of our kitchen shelf after all these years as a stupid reminder of a stupid way to clean old bottles... Live and learn I guess...we all make those first mistakes...

dR - It wouldn't be so bad if it was only the'first' mistake regarding temp and bottles I've made. I also lost a fanatstic amethyst whiskey pint by leaving it on my unheated enclosed porch - um, you see, it was full of water, and the temp dropped to about 5 degrees, end of bottle! ouch! lol

I haven't done any digging in a while, but the best thing I found to clean ordinary dirt, roots, etc from inside of a dug bottle is the gravel that is sold for acquariums - its clean and has pretty sharp edges - lots of swirling, rinse and put fresh detergent and water in often, leave the gravel. And it can be reused a lot. An old fashioned coffee percolater stem cleaning brush is helpful too because they are very narrow and can get into places that an ordinary bottle brush can't. They may be hard to find now that everybody "drips" and doesn't "percolate" much any more.
