I found this clear glass bottle in a disused mining settlement in the lower South Island of New Zealand. The bottle was partially buried in the roots of a tree and still contains some of the organic material.

It's 150mm (6 inches) tall and has two seams which finish half-way up the neck. The neck is finished with a lip. The sides of the bottle are plain but the base is embossed with what appears to be M.co and U.S.A. The M.co is inside a shield shape similar to a Heinz shield although it's more square. There are a number of bubbles in the glass and it doesn't feel heavy.

I am interested in working out the age of this bottle. The settlement was busy between 1864 - 1870 and has been used sporadically since then.

Just by looking at it, I'd guess 1900 give or take a few years. I didn't research the makers mark, so that may or may not narrow it down. We call them slicks when they have no embossing and they are of no monetary value generally. Bottles from that time period tend to indicate the presence of other interesting bottles in the area, if you were to dig around some more you might find a decent dumpsite.

Hi, beatiful country you have there. I enjoyed hiking and seeing the sights when I was there..

The M in a keystone is supposedly Metro Glass Company from New Jersey. circa the 1930s.
