Do you have any interesting old bottles dug with contents still inside? I'm talking early 1900s at the latest. Compared to many here, I've only dug a few small spots, so some of you probably have a lot like this,  but I found these two bottles in different areas, one with the cork and some dried substance still inside. This is the original: http://www.hairraisingstories.com/Products/CAPILLARIS.html
Unfortunately no label in mine, but there is a scrap of foil.
I'm not willing to test it on my hair..

Used to dig LOTS of bottles with contents still in them. Many with urine. Since I dug in a swamp, none of the labels ever survived, and I learned early to empty the contents while still in the swamp. I swear I think there were body parts in some of them!

Didn't dig these, but I found the flask in an old barn, and the soldering salts in a house. I love contents.

Does the cap on that say "National Distillers"? It looks very similar to one. I dug a whole bunch of those in the trash dump behind my house some years back.

I dug a Paris Pefume Co from New Jersey,  dug from an early 1900's dump with half the contents and a cork, recently I noticed if I turn in upside down the contents seep out, I dug it this June or July and nothing leaked as I was cleaning it,I'm afraid the cork shrank or something and eventully the air will dry the contents out whats the best way to seal it back up with out messing the bottle up?  I think it's just another embossed bottle with out the contents that make it look different. ( and by the way the liquid still smells a bit "perfumey." after 100+ years.)

if you do not keep a bottle on its side the cork will dry out, best way to preserve contents is to melt wax and dip the top a couple of times. Yeah baby

VTdigger, Cover the cork in hot wax. When it dries, it will have an airtight seal.

Blackglass, The cap says old quaker on it.

When I lived n Sacramento, I was able to dig a section of the old Philadelphia House. The remnants of the boarding house kitchen had piles of plates, some peppersauces and several cruet(fancy sauce bottles). This one was probably thrown out because the glass stopper was broken off inside the neck........thereby sealing in the contents of what I guess to be steak sauce because of the brown murky spice filled liquid inside.

I never want this to be opened as the smell might knock me out after 140+years of sitting...haha.

Doug

Interesting that people want to keep contents which or may not be unknown in the bottles they find, considering some of the "stuff" that may actually be in the bottle I would rather dump it or leave it personally. There are alot of things out there that can be harmful to us all...Jim

Some of that gunk is the worst stuff ever to clean out!  ive ruined many brushes and have had to scrub drains and sinks.  When the tar-like substances are in there, I often rinse and repeat with warm water and dish detergent multiple times and try to use all sorts of different cleaners.  Such a pain!
