They say one law says 10th to contractor...I'd go 50/50 but I think it's flat wrong for the contractor to think it's all his.

I do not believe the contractor deserves a dime of it. It was her house it was found in, not his, he was performing a task that he was being paid to do to begin with, or he would not have been there at all to begin with. I do think the owner should give him some sort of a finders fee, but that should be her decision. Ten percent is not all that much considering the amount of money invloved. I have to admit though, if I had opened up a wall in someones house, and found all that money, I would be truly sick knowing it was not mine to keep. Then to, that is my opinion, some people think the world owes them something for everything. I would bet, if it would have been the other way around , he would be whining like a small child thinking he should have it all in that respect as well.

Ohio has a finders keepers law so the contractor has a right to it. He mad one big mistake though. He called he and told her it was there instead of keeping it. He also only wants 40% which I think is fair and he will probably get it. It would be great to see the contractor get his share. I live in a state where the laws says finders give to the state and they are the keepers.

Remember, we are talking about money here and not material goods which would be the owners. The money belongs to the government and they get to decide how we use it and the true worth of it, thus the finders keepers.

C'mon, this wasn't found in a city park.

It belongs to the homeowner.  If the contractor had whacked a wall away and found a ton of asbestos would he be fighting to help pay for the abatement costs?  He was there to provide a service, not to keep part of the house's contents.

"The money belongs to the government " ? Really? The debt represented by money belongs to the government, but not my money (other than 30%of it, that is)

10% is a very generous gift on the part of the homeowner, who should be under no obligation to do so.

I am going to have to agree with Jim 1870 here. If I own the home I own the contents. If the contractor found a hugh pile of rat crap..Is he going to try to claim half of it? I don't think so. He was hired to do a job and that is what he is paid to do, Now, I think he made a big mistake when he decided to tell of his find if he wanted to keep it. Not ethically right but $$$$ ahead.. I am saying Homeowners 100%.. Norene

I just looked at all the bills I have and I don't see Jim Owens or any one elses name on them any where but I do see all the mint marks and the treasury it belongs to. The government became a big business when Franklin d. roosevelt collect all the gold coins up and if they want the money you have they will get it.

The guy found the money. She would have never found it had he not been there. He called her and told her he found it and looked for more. He could have kept it ALL to himself and not said diddly but he did. Now that is a pretty good friend if you ask me. Inturn she screwed him to the max. Some friend she is. All she can think about is the maney and she is more than ready to trash her firend ovet it. Seems like she might be the kind of person that would screw he own kin folk.

Parden me for being gracious by I would have split it with him. I would never have lost a friend over money. Money is good to have and all but life isn't long enough to loose even one friend. Folks are just funny like that down here.

Don't know about finders law in the state where found. Generally whoever owns the land owns everything contained in it. Say the person was renting the house, the contractor found it, neither would have a claim the land owner has all the rights.

Anybody know how deep your property goes down into the earth, or how high up?

Some people are greedy , true, and they usually end up suffering for it in the long run. People who are just and charitable end up having better lives for it. I'm not religious but i do believe you reap what you sow.

Myself I would have kept it. All of it. Would have loaded my tool box up and told her to get somebody else to finnish it. There's all kind of owenership laws when it comes to buying land/real estate. This woman bought the house, but did she buy the money in the house? eg. I sold you 100 acres of land . On this land I had a fence w/ 1000 post, also I had a pile of post numbering 1000. I come back a short while later to get my post. You say these post are yours. No the 1000 in the ground are yours. The pile is mine they were not sold to you. You bought property not a pile of post.  The  fence w/ the k is yours it is attached to the property. Also there was a note w/ a name on it would it still belong to that person or his decendents? Kinda like the returned Nazi loot. We know who it belonged to originaly don't we? He didn't see the movie. Keep your mouth shut.

Here's another thought, watch this...the family of the original owner of the money steps forward and says it's theirs to inherit.

Yeah sorry to say I would have been shuving the loot down the front of my jeans, filling my socks and lining my shoes. I'd also ask her to make me lunch if it wasn't too much trouble. A nice steak if you don't mind, New York strip if yu got 'em... a baked potato with sour cream and a little fried crumbled bacon. Need to go shopping? Take my truck, you can carry more. I would have finished the job in my usual perfectionist way and sent her an Xmas thank you card. They would never know the diff. and the only one sleeping better than them would be me.

Nope, my bills don't say Jim Owen or Warren Peacock.  Nor do we have to agree on what $$ represent on a bottle website.

Hopefully, the courts (or the people involved) will figure this out before our dollar is worth less than a penny!

Jim

It was very gracious of the contractor to call her and share it.  Obviously his thought was that he and a friend found money together, and he couldn't wait to share the good news.  Then she screwed him.  He has no obligation to give her a dime.  He found it, she never would have.

Are all you people saying that if you find a bottle dump on an abandon farm that your going to dig it and then track down the owner and give them half?  I dont think so....

How much is being wasted on lawyers fees?  It turned out to be a conflict of interest to work for a friend.  You'd think they'd be happy for each other and share the money.  If this contractor didn't find the money, another one would have.  It was just more complicated by their "friendship".  It's only money.
