You have to clean the dirt off as soon as possible and spray it as soon as possible. Within a minute or two the paint starts coming lose most of the time. I messed up a valuable Barq's Moon Glo by not having the spray with me one day when I got in a hole of mostly ACL's.  I don't dig without it now. When they first come out of the dump I quickly wrap them in newspaper. Then take them home  unwrap them and let them "bake" in the sun a few days.
