Seems like ages since I've posted anything about a dig, but it's just too darn hot to dig down here this time of the year.  But I still try to do a little now and then. I knew about this place for a long time but never got a good hole started.  Nothing but head-high johnson grass and kudzu grows on the bank of this small creek.  Well I got enough courage to take on this jungle and try to get a good hole sunk down in this place.  Here's a photo of what I have to go through to reach the creek.

About a foot under the very black, rich topsoil is a layer of ash, which is very dry.

About three feet down, there's a layer of soda bottles.  Piles of broken glass.

It's getting dark, so I put on the head-light and continue digging.  Hope you can see the different layers in this photo.

This is one of those ribbed, slug plate bottles.  Night shot, so not a very good pic.

This bottle has the March 9, 1920 patent date embossed.  Did a little googling and located the original patent by Chapman Jay Root.  Hope to do more digging here.  So if you guys and gals are interested, I'll post more pictures as the dig progresses. I got home around 9:30 PM.  I had my cell phone on silent mode and missed three calls.  Wifey about ready to send out a search party.

Fred, I live down here in Georgia below Augusta.  Lots of  small TOC dumps, but nothing like the digs you guys have up North.  Still, I like to dig wherever I can find a spot that's out of the way. It's getting harder and harder to locate good dig sites.  So much of the land is being leased to Hunting clubs and getting permission gets harder and harder.

Would the trip to the dump be considered a "Death March"?

Just goota be tough to dig dumps down here. I'm nursing a left arm that's swelled up real bad and has some fever in it.  Hoping it's just horse fly bites and not spider bites. 90+ degree temperature with high humidity puts you soaking wet in about a half hour. Then the sweat  triggers the horse flies, yellow flies, black flies, gnats, skeeters and other pest.  Then you have to constantly watch out for snakes, cottonmouth, copper head, copper bellies, and rattlers.  Then hope that you don't run into a pack of wild dogs or wild hogs on the way back to the truck. But the worse part is when you make it home and face the wifey.  She is giving me heck about the arm.
