Hi everyone. Got to dig for about an hour and a half last night at the church. I didn't take any pics but will take some tonight. It was very interesting..... My honey and I are walking up the creek to get to it and he stops and picks something up and starts giggling, he holds up a round flat rock about 3" across and says "Look honey I found a Wholey Rock." I kept the rock it was cute. We crawl up a hillside and into a ravine he takes the left and i take the right side. I moving junk and broken bottles aside it's newer stuff 1960's and a little earlier at first. Threw aside maybe 300 bottles. It was interesting. I found wiskey, wine, beer, blue canning jars, whiskey, wine, beer, shampoo, lots of milk glass jars, cobalt vicks, amber vicks, whiskey, perfume, whiskey, gin, candle holders, a full set of the green Fire King all broke, about a dozen broke Hoble skirt cokes, depression glass, and other house hold items, A really cool Roy Rogers belt buckle, quill pens, 5 different inks, and on and on. Did I mention whiskey, gin, wine and beer bottles? I kept about 20 really neat ones. Mean while my honey is digging away and says hey babe what's this? He's holding the first poison I've seen dug from a dump, a pretty little 1oz cobalt gem, even if it does have a screw top. He also found a couple of cool embossed sodas that are very intricate and I've never heard of. Fortunately (for me) he does not collect bottles he gives them all to me. He goes to spend time with me and he doesn't want me going alone. He's the perfect digging partner, 6'3", fit, easy going, hard working, patient, knows how to handle a shovel, always willing to go, never complains, and really fun to be with. Any way sorry to get side tracked....I have come to the conclusion that the former inhabitants of the rectory took alot of medicanes, took good care of their skin, used a lot of shampoo, wrote alot, and most of all enjoyed spirited beverages quite often. I just hope when I get to the older stuff the same holds true. And I will carry my little Wholey Rock in my pocket and rub it while saying please let me find the first dump(1805) and all the ones in between. I'm going back tonight. Will get pics.

Hey Lisa...

Nice to here from you! Good luck, you're just scratching the surface. Soon, you'll have to bring a ladder and put "Sweetie" down in the hole!

Hey Cap, this guy is giving us all a bad name!! I won't even let Pam see this thread!
She collects rocks too!! The big ones though! If she read this she'd have me bringing back "Boulders" for the front lawn!!

Cap... she beats the "holy hell" out of me with it!!! What do you think??

Actually, she decorates the yard with them... puts them around the pool, around the driveway... around the walkway... around bushes... around the well... around the garage... around the fence... around the dog... around the beach...

Last summer, she built her own beach!!! she had a truck load of sand brought in, took some of my good sea shells, decorated it... got a fake bannana tree... She's into the "fung shway"" something like that "Trust the force, Luke..." type stuff

She'll be driving down the road, hit the brakes and grab a rock and throw it into the trunk of the car... must be from being with me for 23years!! I swear she'd bury me with them if I gave her an excuse or reason to do so!!

Mainelybroken...

Sure Vicky, I'll send her right up!!! We'll have enough rocks to build a foundation!
No wonder she's been wanting to buy a pick-up truck...

I got rocks all over the place and you want to add to the pile???Thanks...

Now if you want to teach her how to dig for bottles and get her interested in that, then I'll get your phone number and meet y'all in Portland or where ever for a dig... how about that one?

Hey Cap... Morning Lisa...

Well, you guys have done me in... Pam read this thread and she really got a chuckle out of it. Now she wants to build a "rock climbing" wall out in the back yard!!!

Oh well... Hey Lisa, where are these photos of your bottles and your "Holy" rock? We are all anxiously awaiting them... And, sooner or later, everyone is going to want to see a photo of you and your honey! Cap and I have to check out the competition! We're having trouble "measuring up" to his qualities already and we haven't even seen him yet! Hope he's not a diver, cause there's only enough room for one handsome diver on the "Who is this guy" thread...

Hope you got a chance to go out and dig this weekend...

Sorry guys been really busy. Took the pictures....can't figure out how to get them from the camera to the computer. Having a DOT audit at work and am stressed!!!!!!!! Anyway. Your holey rock is prettier than mine. I'm dying to show off the little tiny 20 gallon crock I found and the military wagon tongue and harnesses. Not to mention the long 10 bottle. I do have a serious question...I have permission to dig on a 1820 farm. House still standing. I took a picture of it also. Hiked about 10 miles yesterday trying to find a dump. Can't find anything. I know about where the privies are. And the owner is digging up some old pics of the place from when his grandfather lived there. It was built by his family. I have 30 days to do what ever I want to do out there then they are tearing the place down and developing the property. I will do my best to make this dumb camera give up the pic's I took. It's making me mad!!!!! A guy from Evansville bought the old barn and is taking it down piece by piece to reassemble it at his home. It's hand hewn and pegged. Help..... Please search the darkest deepest nooks and crannies of your brains and give me some ideas on this. There has to be some incredible finds here but I can't find them. The ground is very rocky. And a lot of natural springs.

Thanks,

Lisa

Hey Lisa, Go ahead and dig the privys and other places that you know there will be glass. If you finish them in time then look for the dump.

After they start to develope the property go back every day you can and look around for bottles. Ask the construction workers if the have seen any. Construction guys love to give old bottles to pretty girls, I know because my wife has gotten several nice bottles that way. I know it sounds kinda sneaky but what the hay, get them bottles.

Hey Lisa...

I'm with Warren!! Go out and dig as much as you can... specially where they will be breaking ground first. Get those areas dug and out of the way first... Be sure to check under where the barn is... once they take it down. That's always a pretty good place to find stuff.

Warren is "right on the money" when he suggests that you talk to the supervisor/construction workers about if they find any bottles... tell them to put them aside for you and be sure to check with them every time you can... give them your number or some way they can contact you if you feel comfortale with that...

And when you go there, do your best to convince them that this is a hobby that you really enjoy and you could always bring over some chocolate cookies or a case of beer at the end of the day! That always worked for me (the beer thing that is... not the cookies)

Can't wait to see those pictures... let your "sweetie" help you download that stuff.

Hey guys,

I will work on the picture thing tonight. My sweetie can't get it to work either. He is a wonderful man, the house has the original lightning rods with the blue milkglass balls if the owner will let me have or buy them he's willing to climb up and get them. It's a large 2 store with the fire places on each end (total of 3). Really high. It is the oldest inhabited house in Clark county Indiana. It should really help when Mr. Bottoroff let's me see the pic's. He says he doesn't remember there ever being a dump anywhere except for a sink hole his dad filled in with a bulldozer (back in the late 60's) that they used as a dump a long time ago. I found the sink hole we dug about 5' down & 6' x 6' across alot of old iron and 2 crock crumbs. they also ran septic thru his property a year or two ago he said it was close to the privy (the one he remembers ) I would think that there would be others hopefully undisturbed. We will go tomorrow and probe I would like to go tonight but it's vet night for the horses. There is also a spring house attached to the house I probed it. It has a rock floor under about 18" of collapsed roof and soil. He said I was welcome to dig out the dirt do you think it's worth sifting? I'm going to ask him if I can go in the attic and basement. I love the cookie and beer idea. Hey it's a woman's perogative to use any advantage she can to get the glass. I appreciate the come back. I will find out when they intend to demolish the house and take the day off work to go watch. I will be armed with lots of homemade goodies and a case of bud and a case of miller lite.
