I found this a couple years ago at a dugout. I think it has been through a fire. The bottom is not there.

Slingshot ammo holder? The first pic made it look like an old shift knob for a 4 speed Muncie.

That is very strange. If it were burned and the lead was in it, it shouldve melted so I couldnt have been in the fire long. Honestly at a loss on this one.

Agreed, and I think the thing is probably made from diecast zinc and started "rotting" out in the elements. I'm guessing it was just a reservoir for scrap lead bits waiting to get melted and cast into bullets?

What do you mean it was found "at a dugout"?

Thats what I thought about the lead, it was scraps to be re-cast. As the balls (shot) look to small to be for a muzzle loader ( I believe the .32 cal squirell ML would be the smallest for pests and they look smaller than .32 cal).

Unless they were meant for a M/L shotgun but it doesnt look like you would have many loads there.

Stephen, when the settlers first came out here on the prairie to live they dug a hole in the ground and built the walls with the sod and fashioned a roof above them with what ever material was available. There is usually another one close by which they used for their animals barn. There are many of these on this place, lined up in rows, but not close together like in a town.

Rich, I am sure there were more of the contents, as it was packed full when I found it. And if I remember right I believed at the time the dog is what set off the detector, not the bowl. I just thought it was an interesting item. My Uncle took it to the archeology meeting once and they had never seen anything like it, but did say it was ammunition.

Thanks for looking and thanks for the comments!

I should mention that now there is nothing left of the dugouts except a depression in the ground. A couple of years ago I found a 1918 penny by one and an 1898 penny by another one, one week apart with the naked eye. I was thrilled!

You did detect all those areas and didnt find any buried coins at all? If so, that seems very strange. Being the ones you found were pretty old (on top of the ground) I would definetley suspect there should also be some silver (and possibly) gold coinage to be found.

I know with my MXT-pro detector that when I go over lead it gives me a distinct sound (from all the fishing weights Ive found). Have you found any other bullets? or lead balls?.

Do the white chunks smell like sulfer? if so it might have been homemade bullets for a black powder gun.

Why would oxidized lead smell like sulfur? (unless your suggesting they are fired projectiles?).

Gordon, I smelled the little white chunks and they do not smell like sulphur to me, but they do smudge off leaving a likeness of white chalk. That surprised me. So that is another clue for you guys to ponder. Gunpowder for a black powder rifle would be cool. Thanks you guys.

Thats lead oxide Renee. As with any handling of lead throughly was your hands to prevent any ingestion of it. And id certainly not use any containers for food handling after having lead in them.

Done a lot of bullet casting in my years and you need to take precautions. Breathing the lead pot fumes is definetly a no-no.

Thanks for the explanation, I figured you weren't referring to a dugout canoe so I thought it might have something to do with sod buildings. If you don't mind me asking, what state are you in where these dugouts are so prevalent?

That is a very interesting angle to take regarding treasure and relic hunting. I'd imagine that many of the early occupiers didn't have much cash at hand, but I wouldn't be surprised if a few ole-timers buried caches in the walls of their homes which were never recovered. Ever find anything like that while rooting around dugouts?

And so far I have only found items worth shouting about, nothing with any monetary value, but I haven't spent a lot of time scrounging. And some of the dugouts have been farmed over or filled with dead livestock so as to fill them up. But there are some still undisturbed. And some I only know about by finding pieces of glass on the ground. Maybe I should take some pictures of a few of them some day to post.
