I'm trying to figure out what the emblem on the top of this salt is. It looks like a weasel or a wiener dog. Has a crown at the top. Some type of pseudo royal creast or what???
Comments apprieciated.

I would have to guess a dachsund(wiener dog) as we have a miniature dachsund that looks just like that except she always has a chew toy in her mouth unlike your salt

I like that piece alot....Nice!

That's a St. Berweinerdachsund. The whiskey cask around his neck is a dead give away. The crown is cause, well, he's a Saint. What did I win :P

Whatever it is, it's pretty neat, I hope you find the actual history of it.

My undying respect and admiration for whatever thats worth.

I'm selling off my mother's salt collection since my parents are in poor health and can use the money. Just trying to figure out what some of these salts are so I can make an attempt at listing them properly. Now I know how non-bottle people must feel when they try to sell bottles

Here is a really nice sterling Baltimore salt. Selling prices are pretty poor right now , guess people are spending thier money on gas.

Stuff is selling for a fraction of what its normally worth.

So they held salt? Interesting! Was this before shakers became popular or was this a fancier way of putting salt out for a meal? I'm 37 and have never seen anything like it and I thought I was a history buff, pfft! Guess I don't know as much as I thought. Maybe the doggie is gold plated. Sorry to hear that your folks are not feeling well, hope they get better.

Open salts have been used for probably at least 500 years. The salt "shaker" was apparently invented in 1858 by john mason (the jar guy). Early salt shakers had to have a grinder because the salt stuck together.  Salt shakers didnt really get popular till a lot later when salt was treated to keep it from clumping. Open salts were commonly used at least up until the 20s and 30s.
